Not ideal but keeping Campbell

Created by: Lenny7
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 17, 2021
Published: Nov. 17, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto: Creates cap space to sign Campbell. 3 x $5 to me is the absolute floor.
Nashville: Upgrades bottom 6, but still leaves the Preds with enough money to re-sign Forsberg.

Is it enough? Maybe not...Kerfoot is solid. It just seems like most of the contenders are going to be tight up to the cap, and potentially unwilling to take on $3.5 mil.

With Holl, I personally think you need 7 NHL Dmen, and you're better with him than without.

Can also bury Ritchie to create $1.25 mil more, assuming he goes unclaimed.

I don’t think that the Preds will give up Olivier, as he plays the physical game they’ve been missing for years. You’re far more likely to get an AHLer and/or a draft pick.

I personally don't think it will the AAV will be that high.
Comparable contracts:
Mrzarek 3.8
Saros 5.0
Sorokin 4.0
Driedger 3.5
Pettersen 5.0
Talbot 3.66
Hart 3.97
Merzlikins 5.4

IMO they could get a deal at 4 years 4.5 AAV.
You would need to move Kerfoot and Ritchie, but that is doable. And with Steeves, Ho-Sang, Robertson they have options internally to fill in.

Yeah, I feel like it's just the closest example that I could figure out...I just didn't want the always used "Trade this player anywhere" scenario. tears of joy

If I'm Toronto I'm giving term instead of AAV. Not sure how realistic it is but I'd throw him a 4Mx8

The issue I have with that goaltending list is that the vast majority of those guys were signed as RFA's. Campbell is going strong for a second consecutive season, and if he continues putting these numbers up, he'll be in the running for the Vezina trophy.

Yeah, I could see something like that. Buying out Mrazek was a bit much, but I don't know how you get around it. He and Ritchie just seem like difficult contracts to move.

Petersen or Saros is the starting point, 3/4x5. If he continues to play well, he may look at Markstrom's contract. I don't think 4x4,5 is realistic.

My question to you would be who is the contending team that would be willing to go over 5 mill to take Jack away from a place he has openly said he loves to play in. For me EDM and COL would be the only two.

With Campbell's injury history, age(and how long it took him to reach his potential), has never played more than 31 games in a season, there is more than enough cause for any team. I am not taking anything away from his recent play, he has been fantastic and arguably there MVP so far.

I could be dead wrong but I feel like a he will sign a new deal this season at 4 years 4.5. They max he gets from anytime is 5mil and I don't think he leaves Toronto. Maybe that's just wishful thinking but I have a hard time believing Dubas is going to let his former Soo walk. He will find a number that works for everyone

I don't see that happening at all. I could be dead wrong but I feel like they will be announcing a new deal this year, figure out how to make it fit in the summer

This seems absurd. 4-5 million? For sure. But I'd be very hesitant to give out more than 4 years. Forget that he's a late bloomer, any goalie north of 30 I'd look long and hard at giving term.

I guess the counter point here is that Mrazek played 12 games last year and got 3 x $3.8. I don't know, I could absolutely be off.

Basically just wanted to make a thread to discuss potential options, as opposed to the consistent "Oh we'll just dump these guys!" threads tears of joy

Edit: Forgot to touch on the "He loves Toronto" point. Of course he says that. Is there any scenario imagineable that he turns around and says "Naw, screw this place!". I'm not saying that he doesn't love Toronto, because I'm sure he does, but that's 100% just a P.R. comment.

Toronto has to win it all within Matthews' and Marner's contracts. They can't afford Campbell on a high AAV, so I'd worry about the future impact of a long-term Campbell deal later. Just my opinion though.

I'm as critical of "recency bias" as the next guy, but how are you putting Steeves ahead of Kampf AND not resigning Kase? Pay someone to take Ritchie if you have to. Kase is the type of player this team model (5 guys making over 50% of the cap) needs. Sub $3 million, versatile winger. Remember that Kase is a RFA after this year so its not like we have to outbid anyone to keep him

Your explanation is totally valid, but I think its more "We'll give you 5 years instead of 4" to keep AAV down. I may be over-optimistic but Campbell seems like a pretty unassuming guy who'll take a fair deal. ATM I think 4x4 is still a middle ground where he could get more as a UFA but the leafs still take on a good amount of risk.

All in good fun, I like the debate. For me the max deal should be what Lehner got from Vegas 5 years at 5mil. Both late bloomers, similar numbers. But I agree with the other post, 4 years would be the max I would want to give Jack. In an ideal world 3 but again I just have a feeling 4x4.5 will be the number 🤞

Didn't really think of Kase to be honest, but good point. I think the bottom 6 there are pretty inter-changable, and was less worried about the actual lines than keeping it under the cap, while also keeping Campbell. More for discussion than anything else, tbh.

I also just don't see the point of giving up a pick or prospect to get rid of Ritchie. Prospects are for peasants, not contending teams, but I also think you need to have a reasonably constant stream of ELC's that can come into the lineup over the next 2-3 years. Ritchie's $3.3 mil salary next year isn't easy to move (IMO).

Going to adjust by burying Ritchie and re-signing Kase to see where I can get to. If you're saving the $1.25 mil on Ritchie by burying him, it should still be under the cap with Kase re-signed.

Edit: Gets me to -$19K with 22 man roster (Assuming Kase accepts the QO). *Should* be able to make up that $19 K by shuttling Robertson/Olivier (or which ELC trade you make for Kerfoot) back and forth on non-game days, or by going with an $850 K backup.
