Carolina didn't want to sign a better D man in Hamilton to that kind of deal. Cap hit isn't the issue, it's the term on the deal. We've seen that in them walking away from Dougie and bringing in KK.

That said, make the pick a 2nd and not a 1st, I'd take that for a rental

EDIT: One lineup correction. Pesce would play LD, not Bear. Pesce has played LD before. Skjei slides down to 3LD.

with an extension, has to be pretty close to what the Sabres got for Ristolainen (which was an massive Overpay has a pending UFA... Klingberg is better and will have a new contract)

Risto got a 1st 2nd and Hagg, has to be similar package framework IMO

Think Klingberg's next contract is going to be closer to $8M than $7M, but it probably depends on term as well.

There's been rumors that he's after an 8-year deal at $62-66M in total from the Stars, but that number could get higher or lower depending how this season goes and whether he goes to free agency or not.

At any rate, seeing how team friendly his last contract was I just don't see him signing any cheaper than Morgan Rielly did.

As for the return...imo it's meh. Preds deals for Ekholm last year were close to this, and imo Klingberg is a step up from Ekholm. He's one of the best offensive D-men in the league.

Additional note: if this return is going to be the best Stars can get for Klingberg, I hope they just re-sign him.

I think this trade was an outlier, such a massive trainwreck. I feel like Faulk to STL is a better comparable, though Klingberg should fetch more as he is better than Faulk was at the time.

As a fan of both teams, I don’t see Dallas giving up on him this season as long as they are in the hunt for the playoffs.

but its a pretty token frame work, 1st prospect roster player is something we see all the time for anyone noteworthy as a player getting moved who is about to be a UFA.
Muzzin a few years ago was a 1st, Carl Grundstrom, and a prospect.
Brandon Montour was traded for a 1st and Guhle

So I think your trade proposal is pretty spot on with what we have seen for top 4 Dmen being moved either as pending UFA, with a year left on their contract, or with an extension

7 years is too long. The Canes won't give him that many years

Too much to give up unless there is a bad injury to Slavin or Pesce.

Honestly maybe they should start looking at the future. They could probably get a ton of futures including 2 1st rounders from Pavelski, Klingberg and Radulov trades
