Monahan Trade

Created by: yycofred
Team: 2021-22 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 6, 2021
Published: Dec. 6, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Flames fans need to get their heads out of their ass on Monahan's value, he's been shopped around the league with little to no interest.
Calgary isn't going to take a bath on a deal but they likely don't win one, $6.375M for a guy who has been a sheltered 3rd liner at best this year is not a deal you win.

Flames needs:
- Improvement at C
- Top 6 RW

What teams are getting in a Monahan deal
Pros:
- Goal scorer
- PP 1
- Career 0.72 PPG
- Leadership in the room

Cons:
- Recovering from hip injury
- 0.60 PPG last three years
- 0.38 Even Strength PPG last 3 years (0.5 Career)
- Poor skating
- 66% O Zone starts for a bottom 6 player this year
- Cannot drive a line
- Year and a half left before negotiating a likely pay decrease with a UFA

Let's pretend we know who is on his NTC (10 team list) using the bottom 10 teams from last year.
-Buffalo
-Anaheim
-Columbus
-New Jersey
-Detroit
-San Jose
-Ottawa
-LA
-Vancouver
-Chicago

Teams that can fit him reasonably in a deal and could look to improve middle 6 C
- Nashville
- NYR
- Montreal (LTIR Space)
- Seattle
- Boston (Clear 3.3M)
- Minnesota (Clear 3.23M) Major cap changes next year
- NYI (Clear 4.93M when Pullock returns)

Of those teams, Seattle doesn't look competitive, Montreal likely wants picks this year, Minnesota has been uninterested and can't afford him next year, Islanders would have to move a serious roster piece to fit him in when Pulock returns.

Potential destinations:
- Boston
- Montreal
- Nashville
- NYR
- NYI
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. DeBrusk, Jake
  2. Kuhlman, Karson
  3. 2022 2nd round pick (BOS)
BOS
Boston doesn't really have the pieces that the Flames would want to target, Debrusk obviously is on the block but the Flames would have to negotiate a new deal with him next year with a weird QO and he's low on the depth chart on the LW side.
    2.
    MTL
Great target, played for Sutter, potentially on Monahan's NTC, Flames could need to add to this deal
      3.
      NSH
No idea what the Preds do, if they're buyers then Monahan could be a good piece for a run there, if they're sellers I would hope Calgary targets a Forsberg as a rental even. Calgary obviously adds
        4.
        CGY
        1. Kravtsov, Vitali
        Additional Details:
        ++
        NYR
Rangers are similar to Nashville and Boston, all depends on how their season goes and I don't think the targets for Calgary are really there Strome/Chytil/Kratsov
          5.
          CGY
          NYI
Not a lot of great targets here either, not sure what the Islanders part with but I would hope the Flames would be in on a JGP

MTL and NYR make the most sense, but I could see Seattle taking a chance on him if the Flames go for one of their guys with 1 year left on their contract.
I could even see Detroit not being one of the teams on NTC and him going there with how well they have played compared to expectations.

He likely wouldnt block a trade to Ottawa, especially over Edmonton. He played in Ottawa for juniors so he knows the area well

Huge part of this whole post is that we have no idea who is on or off the NTC, I just used the bottom 10 teams from last year because there is no point in this exercise if I am just guessing. I get what you are saying though for sure.

As said in the description, bottom ten teams from last year. Shouldn't have Edmonton on there that would be really dumb and lessen his leverage, just as a player in Philly would never have to put Pittsburgh on the a NTC. Calgary and Edmonton won't have a trade between the two of them other than a Smid/Lucic type deal, his NTC in reality is probably close to 20 teams due to different circumstances.
            - 10 teams he doesn't want to go to
            - Teams Calgary will never make a blockbuster with (EDM, VAN)
            - Team that 100% cannot afford a deal (Tampa, Vegas, St Louis)
            - Teams that don't need a mid 6 C (Winnipeg, Washington, Pittsburgh, Toronto etc)

He gets to remake his ten team list at the start of the season, he completely deleverages his position if he puts any of the above teams on there.

Person would rather Strome than Monahan. I don’t see him as a clear improvement. Not to mention Strome has been playing very well the past couple of years for us. He and Panarin have chemistry I wouldn’t mess with, at least not for Monahan.

Not sure he's interesting from a mtl standpoint unless he's a dump. I think Toffoli's a good fit for CGY but i wouldn't take on Monahan if the rest of the return is diminished

100%, I think you and every other Ranger fan could agree on that. When I said similar to Nashville is was in a sense that if things go south by the deadline and Strom would be a rental piece for the Flames. If the Rangers are within a sniff of a playoff spot I would be shocked to see them move Strome.

Gotcha. I think I misunderstood before. Thanks for explaining.

He's not a dump but Calgary would certainly add to the deal, I would add a pick or prospect for sure, I think Calgary and Montreal could be really good trade partners on a couple pieces, Toffoli, Dvorak, Chiarot

This sums up my thoughts exactly. If the habs were to trade Toffoli, they wouldn't be looking for a Monahan in return, IMO it would be a 1st+ so if CGY wants to add Mohanan to that kind of package then yes a deal could likely be made.

For me this would make more sense if it was Monahan for Gallagher because then MTL would be moving long term salary out, not sure what Gllaghers value is in the league but his contract worries me.
