They only have $2,765,000 in cap space with Hauge and Roy to resign (both are gonna command at least 3 AAV).. and that's before replacing Smith, Janmark, and most of the bottom 6.

Karlsson isn't a bad player at all but the league has Vegas over a barrel and anyone would be literally moronic to give them anything back in any trade they need to get cap compliant. The key here is term where unlike Dadonov or Brossoit who are expiring deals, Karlsson still has 5 years left at 5.9. With Eichel in the fold, Stephenson's play and chemistry with Stone and Patches, and Roy's emergence.. 5.9 becomes a lot to pay someone who is going to be their 3C... maybe 4C as Roy gets even better. I know Karlsson is original VGK but getting a soon to be 30 year old 3C with a 5.9 cap hit for 5 years off the books makes sense for a team that's always trying to improve and always competing. Moving Karlsson and paying a price of a pick to move him makes sense.

For Karlsson, he gets to go somewhere and be a 1C and get tons of ice time. It's still close (literally a 4 hour drive or 40 minute flight to Vegas where he has put down some roots), and with the term on his deal could potentially be in AZ as they come out of a rebuild and could be a great mentor to players like Hayton and whoever the Coyotes draft high the next two years.

There's been a lot of Zucker debate here as of late, but the Pens don't have to add crazy assets like that to move him. He's been playing great hockey, his scoring is finally starting to come and only has one year left. The Pens are better off holding him this year unless the right deal comes up, and waiting until the off-season to reevaluate what to do.

1) nico sturm isn't leaving Minnesota for a 1 year 2.5mil deal with Arizona . His wife plays in Minnesota. He's a really good defensive, like ek without the offense

2) Brandon duhaime is a good young Winger whose played every game as a rookie! Seen in the eyes of wild fans, staff, and hm to be the next foligno, Hartman! He's not available to be traded especially for a 3rd round pick!

Flames are happy with Lucic's leadership. We need his leadership and physicality. Karlsson will easily have positive value not a cap dump

Not at all. He's been playing great this year and the scoring is starting to come back around. He may not hit 20G this year, but he's contributing.

Something else that non-Pens fans miss and of course I don't blame them for not knowing, is that Hextall has been clear that he doesn't want to make any cap dumps. He only wants hockey trades.

i think zucker realizes now he needs to be a grinder type player. he looked really aggressive against Vegas which is what they'll need with skilled players like malkin and kap

With Calgary having to hand out big contracts to Gaudreau, Mangiapane, Tkachuk, and Kylington this off-season, I could see them being desperate to move Lucic

Zucker and Karlsson still have positive value though

The Pens need that in general. The only real weakness offensively I've talked about the last few years are players who will create chaos in the crease and get those dirty goals. If he can continue do that then it will go far for the Pens, especially in the playoffs where scoring is harder.

As of RN. They would probably rather move Monahan. He hasn't been that good recently

That's fair tbh. Although I think with how long Monahan has been with the franchise they'll probably be loyal to him and give him another season to bounce back

I would suggest none of the players who has NMC or M NTC would leave their good teams for Arizona.

I can’t see Vegas giving up a first to take on Karlsson who I think still is a positive asset. Zucker as well isn’t terrible and only has 1 year left and while Lucic’s contract is pretty bad the flames like what he brings to the bottom six and I can’t see them giving up that much to move him out

Lols there’s zero chance we’re paying to get rid of Karlsson, if we were to move him it’s because hed probably draw us the most compensation out of anyone to be moved.

I don't think anyone on this thread understands 1. the cap 2. leverage. First of all, saying Zucker's scoring is finally starting to come around? Dude has 3 goals in his las 20 games... but that's besides the point. If the Pens want to stay competitive they only have 33 mil in space to resign Geno (or an equivalent), Rust (or an equivalent), Letang (or an equivalent) each of those players or their replacements costs at least 6.5-8 AAV - so there's 19.5-24 of the space gone and that's before replacing/upgrading Carter, a backup goalie, and the entire bottom 6.

So again, i'm not saying Zucker is terrible I'm saying literally what leverage does Pitt have for a soon to be 31 year old, scoring at 4th line rates making 5.5? The answer is none. There isn't going to be a bidding war for Zucker. If the Pens decide they don't want to attach assets to move him.. fine that's a different thing, but he's not a player anyone is paying the Penguins for and frankly any team would be foolish to give any assets to them to take Zucker, Matheson, Petterson or any player that opens up cap space for them.

That's just not true, given how many players have done it recently. Kessel, Stralman just to name a few.

Again why would any team give up literally anything to help Vegas here? This isn't about Karlsson being bad it's about Vegas having literally negative leverage. Same with Dadonov or Brossoit, good players who other teams may like to have.. but no team has literally any incentive to give up anything for any of them. Let's say Vegas says "We think Dadonov is good, same with Brossoit, we love Karlsson" the rest of the league can just shrug and go "okay" and then Vegas can lose Smith, McNabb, Janmark and have literally no cap space to resign Roy or Hague, or fill out their roster. It's a leverage play of which Vegas has none.

Now what you have on your side is that this league is routinely stupid - i.e. the flower trade this offseason where Chicago took him without making VGK pay up (a moronic move in my opinion).. and look some team is about to trade a 1st round pick for Ben Chiarot, this league is full or rock chewing idiots. But hypothetically, and please remember this is a message board armchair GM team.. I just wanted to explore the idea of what I think it would cost for Vegas to get a team to take Karlsson and has 5 years remaining.

I'd put Lucic in the same camp as Stralman last year where the Panthers said you can waive and to this place where you'll play or we can bury you in AHL or buy you out. Stralman waived and chose to go somewhere he could play and keep his career going, I'd bet Lucic (who waived his NMC to go to Cal and then again this summer to help Calgary with expansion would do it).

Here's the thing...

1) Nobody said he isn't overpaid, but that doesn't mean he has the negative value you're proposing
2) He only has ONE year left. He's playing such a great all-around game right now (which you can look his analytics for yourself and they're off the charts good) that the Pens can wait out the season and decide what to do which will not require adding a high pick, let alone two. They'd be better off buying him out over this deal.
3) You don't know how to assess hockey players.
4) Hextall has already said he refuses to add on sweeteners to move his players and only wants hockey trades.
