What can the Flyers salvage in a second trade involving Rasmus Ristolainen

Created by: sensonfire

Initial Creation Date: Jan. 24, 2022

Description
6 months ago, the Flyers spent the 14th overall pick and a 2nd round pick on Rasmus Ristolainen.

As of today, the Flyers have lost 11 straight games and are far from competing for a playoff spot at the halfway point of the regular season.

With the NHL trade deadline less than 2 months away and Ristolainen set to become an Unrestricted Free Agent, the situation appears to be rather dire for the Flyers.

Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher will need to do something.

What can the Flyers salvage in a second trade involving Rasmus Ristolainen from another NHL team?

Here are your options:

A 1st round pick

A 2nd round pick

Both

Neither
2.
COL
I remember when we gave up the pick with the highest odds in the 2019 Draft Lottery as part of the 1st Matt Duchene trade.

Although Colorado didn't win the lottery at the time, it still turned into the 4th overall pick that was used to select Bowen Byram.
    3.
    OTT
In the 2nd Matt Duchene trade with Columbus, we managed to salvage another 1st round pick for 2019.

The 19th overall pick used to select Lassi Thomson.

19th overall is a steep drop from 4th overall.

      But it's a 1st round pick nevertheless.

It's going to be a major L anyways, so Flyers should just re-sign the guy. Give him 2 years at $4,5M or something. Give him time to prove himself in less broken system, because currently the Flyers suck more than Sabres does and that says everything that needs to be said about his and Flyers' current situation.

I think they can get a late 1st from the right team kind of like you mentioned with Duchene. It just probably wont have all the additional pieces because Risto isnt playing out of his mind like Duchene was at the time.

Flyers better pray that some contending team finds themselves of a a RHD. Seems like a 2nd rounder, in the mid 20s would be about the best return Risto gets.
I'm surprised this trade didn't get more criticism when it made last summer. Bare playoff teams should never risk a lottery pick on an upcoming UFA.

Sabres told themselves the same thing for years about Risto. The problem the Flyers have is that they can't take advantage of the Flyers to overpay for him. I think the Flyers best bet is to take whatever they can get for him at the deadline. If they retain half his salary and take money back they may be able to get a first from a desperate team at the deadline.

Like I said, it's going to be a major L anyway, no matter what they'll do.

I personally would rather try re-signing him for a couple of years rather than move him for highest bidder as a desperation move. The thing is at least with keeping him for a while they MIGHT have a chance for him to bounce back and then get more value out of him.

Risto just bad, he was always like that, unlike ROR, Eichel, Reinhart and McCabe.

Got blasted by Leafs fans a few weeks ago for suggesting Risto ends up in Toronto, but I can still see it. The team needs to get tougher on D. Dubas needs to get past the first round. TOR needs to shed cap space for next season.

Risto with half retained for Toronto 1st, Holl and/or Richie.
