Description
As you can tell by my handle, not a Dallas fan or follower. I was just curious to know if a Petry trade to Dallas could work for them financially without Habs needing to retain any money.

Obviously, the dollar amounts for some resigning are probably off as I don't know these players and their history. I think they resign Pavelski but would have to think the cap hit needs to be much lower than this year at his age. I wonder if dangling a two year extension for a 38 yr old this summer gets it done. Also, would imagine there would be some performance bonuses as well. For Radulov, not sure that Dallas should bring him back - reason I did just one year extension.

Lines might not be correct but think this could be a really solid team that would contend for playoffs and could maybe surprise once their at the dance.

Even if the contract dollars are off and need adjusting, they still have nearly $6M to work with.

I feel like the logical question here is:

"Why send a 1st+prospect off for a 34 year old, coming off an abysmal year, and getting stuck through his age 35, 36 and 37 years, when you could just spend an extra mil, keep the assets, and extend Klingberg?"

Aging curves are historically accurate, and hoping that Petry will bounce back is a pretty foolish risk to take for this price.

Aging curve are mostly applied to player that haven’t been good skater their entire career. If you look at guy’s that have had longevity success they all had one thibg in common they where able to move their feet. This is why he will bounce back successfully and probably have the same or better succes then with the Habs that where a pretty bad team for the past 4 years.

Shea Weber is the prime example of you being on the wrong end here. Players age, they get slower. When they get slower, they need to make quicker decisions. Superstar players? Sure, the speed thing might apply as much to them, but Jeff Petry ain't no superstar.

if you think Weber is an example of Petry's future than the rest of your statement in moot. They play a very different style of game Weber always relied on his physicality in the defensive zone and his offensive production came mainly from his point shot. Petry is a much better skater, has the ability to skate the puck up the ice both things that werent strengths of Weber. Mobile defensemen age better than physical dman. If you've watched petry play this season its very clear that the decrease in production and effective play seem to be a case of motivation and not a decline in his skating. He has no drive and he routinely makes mistakes due to a lack of attention to detail, i do think you will see a much different petry once he is traded whether that is too dallas or a different US market.

Agree to disagree. Couple of counterpoints to your question. Word on the street with NHL insiders' is that Klingberg is looking for 8 yrs at $8M per at the very least. That to me would be pretty foolish for Dallas to do considering Klingberg's numbers offensively have declined significantly in the last four years. But regarding your comment about aging curves, explain how Pavelski (after a down year in his first with Dallas) and a guy like Suter (signing a 4yr deal) that brings him into his 40's is ok but Petry at 34 won't age well? I get that Suter's cap hit is nearly half of Petry's but even Dallas fans know that was a bad contract to sign by Nill.

Here are the facts about Petry's horrible season - in order of importance/impact:

1 - not having Weber anymore as the first pair D (Petry is a 2nd pair Dman), forcing him into a role not ideally suited to him
2 - not having Edmundson on his left side all year
3 - the lingering pandemic and tighten restrictions in Quebec forcing his wife to stay in Michigan with the kids (can't be easy for anybody, regardless of your livelihood or money)
4 - clearly not liking your head coach and trying to get him fired (for the record as a Habs fan, I think Dom Ducharme is a horrible coach and doesn't belong at the NHL level)

None of the above reasons are relating to diminish skills. Having a bad season can happen to the best of players. That doesn't mean Petry isn't a NHL defenseman anymore.

If Dallas did trade for him, I see Petry bouncing back next season for a 45 + point campaign playing behind Heiskanen and paired with Suter which essentially replaces the offense Klingberg has been producing the last few years.

I dont believe Klingberg' s next deal is at 7.25 mil, i think if that was his asking price he would probably already be extended, i think he has requested a trade because the contract talks were far apart.

It wouldnt be a extra million it would be 2+ for 8 years instead of 3. For a dman that doesnt even play in all situations.

Which is competely fine...I mean, I'd probably be as uncomfortable giving him $7.25 as I would giving Petry $6.25 to be honest, but at least you're getting *some* prime years, as opposed to just getting the arse end, right?

Honestly, if I'm Dallas, I trade away Klingberg, and I try to find a cheaper, younger option than Petry. Handcuffing yourself with that contract, while also giving up good assets is a foolish move.

If you honestly think Klingberg gets paid one of the top 10 defencemen in the NHL, have I got a deal for you!

if you dont realize that when it comes to free agent contract its not always the best that get paid most but the one who has most recently signed a contract. then you havent been paying much attention The going rate for top dman this past offseason sat in the 9-9.5 mil range for some dman that i would've been uncomfortable paying 7 mil for.

Maybe 8 mil for Klingberg is a bot much, but in no world Petry get a 1st at this moment (TDL or end of season) the only trade i see is for klingberg but only if klingberg sign and extension for the Habs (which i doubt, no point in signing a high salary d if we can't compete)

Doigie hamilton darnell nurse and seth jones all got atleast 9 last offseason and none are top 10 dmen.

He will be a right shot top 4 dman going to open market he will get 9 if he really wants it.

At what point in is career Weber was a great skater? That wasn’t your best response my friend i could tell you that.

It's weird that everyone on this thread continues to neglect age...Hamilton (27), Nurse (25), and Jones (26) were all 2+ years younger than Klingberg when they signed. And, to say that Dougie Hamilton isn't a top 10 NHL dman is a stretch.

You said "If you look at guy’s that have had longevity success they all had one thibg in common they where able to move their feet."I used Weber as an example of you being completely incorrect..If you look at the oldest active players in the NHL, none of them are known for their footspeed, because, as we all know, you get older, you get slower.

Its easy when you blatantly lie i guess.

Hamilton was 28 when he signed not 27.

Jones will be 28 almost to the day of his deal kicking in not 26.

Nurse will be 26 not 25.

And dougie isnt a top 10 dman. Nobody reasonavle thinks that.

You Mean Joe thorton who isn’t even in the line up , get real defenseman over 35 in the NHL are all great skater, Burns, Keith, Giordano, Letang, Suter, Goligoski, Yandle. And their Chara who is atrociously bad dor the past 5-7 season but still get under contract because he is Chara. But that it other older defenseman who can skate are no longer playing. So
I was absolutely correct in my comment about older player having succes after 35.

I mean, Joe Thornton, between his age 35 season and age 40 season, had 284 points in 349 games for a 67 pt/82 game pace, and Chara was still putting up fairly similar possession stats as the upper tier of stay-at-home dmen as recently as 2 years ago. Sure, we can just say "800 year old Thornton sUcKs!!!", but let's not skip over the fact that he, and Chara, were both absolute beasts during their 35-40 seasons.

Are they good players at the moment nop! Does any other not skating well player lver 35 are having success in the Nhl at the moment nope. Stop acting like a baby. This is a fact that players who doesn’t skate well are not aging well. Yes there a couple guy’s that make it past 35 but on a big if we compare them to the one who had great skating abilities the list is far more impressive. So yes players that skate well are more likely to have success longer in their career.

Is Jeff Petry, who this thread is based on, good at the moment?

Does Petry can skate yes! The guy is still playing over 22 minutes a night. He is just not engage a he should be. That the only thing that is bringing is value down at the moment. Scout that have been watching him for the past 5 years know how good of a players he is. In fact he was there only 4 defenseman with 10 goal 40 points in the past 4 years ans he is one of them.

And maybe he is not good but he isn’t bad either. Just not playing at the level he is capable of. Any players that get 22* minutes of ice time are doiing good thing. So take a pill
