Montreal is not trading their best player who plays a position of weakness for a player who plays a position of strength.

Who is trading Nick Suzuki for Lafreniere? If that was a viable trade, Rangers would have done it months ago.
I'd say Laf + Nils + 1st probably = Suzuki

Poolman = cap dump, the pick should be going the other way. No one wants to pay a 6th/7th d 2.5 mil.

At draft table, what if Habs trade their 1st (whether it’s 1OA or 2 OA or 3rd OA) to NYR for Laf straight up …

Hmm not sure about this. I had this argument just prior the season so I asked a hockey community and this was the poll results :

Lafreniere is still 20 y/o and was a recent 1st OA pick. It would be VERY RISKY to give up on him this early. You'd have to be pretty convinced that he will not figure it out

Look at what Dorion did with Zibanejad. He traded the 23 y/o 50 pts center right away when he became GM in 2016. Zibby finally broke out at 25 y/o and look at him now.

Suzuki is also still young and will continue to grow but IMO he plays a very mature game already and doesn't have a ton of untapped potential left. I see him as a good 2-way 65 pts center, could be a great #2 C on a contender.
