Leafs Going For It

Created by: leafer86
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2022
Published: Feb. 15, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs sign Klingberg to a 5x5 as part of a sign & trade. Holtby comes in and stabilizes Campbell for the playoff run, he's been there and can provide leadership to him and the room.
Dallas eats a lot of salary but Leaf's compensate them well.

They will need to get creative next year, which means goodbye Kerfoot and Holl most likley.
Dubas knows his time is numbered if he doesn't do something now. Our top four would be solidified for the next couple years as well we keep our big guys in tact. It's just about filling the gaps once we've signed Campbell, as we have been doing for the last couple years.

Let me just save you - I'm sorry Dallas fans - this is wrong in every way.

Klingberg shoots right… and provides nothing else to the lineup. If the leafs are targeting a player that plays PP minutes, they’re after the wrong player.

I know Leafs fans have never been the biggest proponents of Engvall, but is he really a negative value player? The way I see it he's a very serviceable bottom 6 guy with a decent contract for his level of production. The kind of player you get a 4th-6th for at the deadline from a contender wanting to increase their depth.

unreal defensive stats this year, will take over for Mikheyev on the Kampf-Kase checking line next year. Also chipping in offensively. Moving him would not be a smart move unless we're getting an upgrade on Holl

Dallas declines. And the best powerplay in the league shouldn't be trading for a powerplay merchant of a defenceman

laugh For 5x5 Klingberg stays in Dallas not Toronto try more like 8x8 or 8x9 for Klingberg.

He's actually a really good player. Leaf fans are often really dumb. Many of us think any player on any other team is better than all our players beyond the core 4 Rielly and Muzzin.

Well it's clear he doesn't want to stay in Dallas, he's made that well known, but 5x5 is hopelessly optimistic

Engvall is better than he's given credit for. He does his job. Not every player can be star. But Red Wings decline. We already have too many bottom 6 forwards.

Just ignoring the trades.....how would the Leafs be cap efficient next season? Even if the fantasy of JK signing for 5m......Leafs have lost the cap efficient Liljegren and Engvall, no NHL goalies, no Amirov (two years away) and no first round pick.

Well if he wants either 8x8mil or 8x9mil then yeah Dallas can't afford him. but obviously he's not taking 5x5mil from Toronto either some team will pay him what he wants.

He's asked for a trade already so he wants out. My guess is he wants to find a place where he can rebuild his value which has fallen off over the past 2 years.

From what i heard to read, He wants to be traded to a team that will give him what he wants. Similar to the Seth Jones trade even though Jones was still an RFA and Klingberg is a UFA. Hearing that he wants that 8th year so it sounds like a sign and trade kind of deal where Jim Nill would give him the 8th year and the team that would acquire his rights would give him assets back similar to what Chicago and Columbus did with Seth Jones.

At 30 already I would say getting 8 years an major money is a stretch. Especially after back to back down years

Leafs need a righty. And one that can skate well and move the puck would suit their style of play. Their PP doesn't need anything, It's almost 4% better than the 2nd best pp
I realize Klingberg is having a tough year, but who would you prefer?

I suppose that's why Leafer86 named the post "going for it"

I just feel like if a player is a powerplay specialist, it’s not a play they should go after. I think they need to get a top 4 guy to play with Sandin, and play Muzzin with Liljegren together against better matchups until Muzzin proves he’s healthy. He’s looked very slow and Liljegren is a better skater and passer than Holl.
