a three way trade i came up with last night on the forums

Created by: Bobcat205
Team: 2021-22 Columbus Blue Jackets
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 15, 2022
Published: Feb. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In all:

Montreal acquires:

$1,750,000 on the cap for retaining on Ben Chiarot's contract
Liam Foudy
Vitali Kravtsov
2022 5th round pick (NYR)

Columbus acquires:
$875,000 on the cap for retaining on Ben Chiarot's contract
2022 2nd round pick (MTL)

New York Rangers acquire:

Ben Chiarot (75% retained, $875,000 cap hit)
Markus Karlberg (reserve list)

Every team can find a positive out of this.

-Montreal gets two young pieces to develop and build around

-Columbus gets one step closer to clearing out the buildup of young bottom-6 talent that needs NHL playing time, and gets a 2nd round pick for helping out

-New York gets a defensive depth option (that can play second pairing (middle 2?) minutes if need be) for DIRT CHEAP

other unrelated bright spots:

-Vitali Kravtsov leaves New York and gets NHL playing time in Montreal, making him happy

-Habs fans are happy because of a good haul for Chiarot

-Nothing is changed on the Jackets roster, which is nice for me since i like consistency

As much as these Habs threads of "Chiarot for 1st++++" have been hilarious...Is Kravtsov and Foudy for Chiarot and 33OA really a good haul for Chiarot? You said it yourself-Foudy is part of a bottom 6 logjam in Columbus. I wouldn't give up 33 OA for him. Straight up Krav for Chiarot isn't *the worst* trade in the world for the Rangers, but they also don't need a middle man to double retain (they've got a ton of space right now).

Honestly, you do have a ton of early-twenties bottom 6 guys...maybe it's time for Jarmo to package some and upgrade the lineup?

He would fit in the bottom-6 in Columbus, but on a team like Montreal, Foudy can play some middle-6 minutes (second line alongside Anderson and Armia would likely be his limit for now) and could develop into a reliable piece around there if the cards are played right (that would be a justification for a 2nd, but i could lower to a 3rd). He's very fast, and has good playmaking ability.

A rough idea of the Habs lines:

Drouin - Suzuki - Gallagher
Anderson - Dvorak - Kravtsov
Hoffman -Foudy - Armia
Lehkonen - Byron - T. Pitlick

Rangers don't need any retention at all on Chiarot. So them paying a premium for it is just not something that's gonna happen

Plus Habs are able to retain 50% on their own without PAYING the 33rd overal pick to do so.

There's no reason for Columbus to be in this at all since the Rangers don't need that kind of retention.

I also don't get why this is a good haul for Montreal. They're asking for the Savard return on Chiarot and feel like they can get it. In this proposal they're getting Kravstov, a guy that the Rangers have reportedly been trying to trade for a 1st with no takers and Foudy, a guy that can't crack the bottom 6 of another lottery team. They're also giving up a pick that is as close to a 1st as possible. That's a pretty terrible haul.

Why on earth would Montreal play Foudy (who has taken, like, 10 faceoffs in the NHL) as 3rd line center and not Jake Evans? Where is Caufield? Where is Rem Pitlick? Where is Poehling?
