Description
I have most of my reasoning with the trades already written with the trades. I hate to see some of the guys go but realize with the cap crunch things are going to need to change unless players agree to sign really team friendly deals. (Which I highly doubt they take a massive discount). With how the team is going I think we can find a way to replace Fiala with McCann in some ways. Use the high pick to get a winger and hopefully keep the prospect pool full.

One thing about the Talbot trade is that it doesn’t have to be Buffalo, just a team with a need of a veteran goalie.
Charlie Lindgren is more of a place holder for another goalie that they would sign to be back up as Wallstedt is getting ready in the AHL. Unless they believe Wallstedt is ready which I believe is highly unlikely.

Tell me what you think of the trades. One thing I’m really curious about is if we trade for McCann or someone like him how much do you think resigning him would cost. Also do you think the Fiala is of good value and if Ottawa won’t part with a first do you take a second and higher end prospects or is that a non starter. For me I would hold for a 1st because we could still do a sign and trade with him so the Sens would get him for a long term, what he wants and security he wouldn’t walk in a year for them.

Another question, if we can sign Fillip Johansson he hasn’t played great over in Sweden. Do we get a compensation pick? Because from what I’m hearing this is suppose to be a pretty deep draft. Take that with a grain of salt, but still wouldn’t want to lose a past 1st rounder for absolutely nothing.

Trades
1.
MIN
  1. McCann, Jared [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
This would give the Wild a good center allow them to move Hartman to the wing opposite of Boldy, and possibly allow them to cushion the loss of Fiala.
SEA
  1. Hunt, Daemon
  2. 2022 2nd round pick (MIN)
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Not 100% sure of the prospect that would be sent to Seattle. But Hunt is a solid prospect, possibly Peart. I don’t think we would send Marat or Beckman. I think O’Rourke maybe in play because of the RFA status of McCann.
2.
MIN
  1. Järventie, Roby
  2. 2022 1st round pick (OTT)
Additional Details:
A 1st rounder and good prospect is good value for Fiala. If they would want to try and protect the pick and offer a 2nd they would need to up the prospect to Grieg and maybe Sokolov on top. But I think a 1st and solid prospect still makes the most sense. Also Sens have the cap space so the Wild wouldn’t need to retain anything.
OTT
  1. Fiala, Kevin [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Fiala would give Ottawa a top 6 Forward that they need. This would also be a sign and trade to maximize value. 7.5x6 is roughly what I think Fiala would demand.
3.
MIN
  1. 2022 3rd round pick (BUF)
Additional Details:
This seems like a good start for compensation for the Wild from Buffalo. Also leaves them some additional cap space. The Wild have Kaapo and Wallstedt on the way so Talbot might me a cap causality.
BUF
  1. Talbot, Cam
Additional Details:
This would provide Buffalo with a solid veteran presence. As they wait for their young guns to develop.

So if you go the route of keeping Dumba and moving Fiala, instead of vice versa, is the plan to just let him walk for nothing? Or is there hope that he re-signs for cheap? I just don’t see why we wouldn’t opt to move Dumba and lock up Fiala. Seems to make most sense from an asset management standpoint as well as just keeping the less replaceable player.

The FWD trades just seem to me like moving things but it'll all just end up as lateral moves at best.

I don't know what McCann's next contract will be, but that seems low. He's paced around 60p this year and last, and is a (middle-6) center. He'll probably pot 30g this year too.

Trade Talbot for a bucket of pucks as long as there is no cap coming back and I'm happy.

I don't like the d-corps. I think they need to add a bigger, stay at home, solid d-zone/PK 2nd pair LD. Kulikov is a good 5D that can play up due to injury, but not what any competitive team should have as the planned 2nd pair d-man for the season.

ROR will be the callup prospect. Lambos will be back in the CHL. Just as a note.

I think the logic there, although I don't agree with it is 1, Dumba isn't playing up to his $6M cap hit, so there will for sure be a haircut on that. 2, you could potentially get a hometown discount around 4.5 on his current value of 5.1, However, bringing in a big money player really doesnt make sense to me personally.

solid takes , I believe Ottawa should do this if the pick is not top5 in 22. McCann would be a nice addition for the Wild

Yeah and i just don’t think that’s very prudent decision making. You shouldn’t be keeping guys based on the hope that they’ll take a discount. Calculated MV does not necessarily translate to what he’ll actually get in a real contract. Defense markets get inflated all the time, as we saw last summer.

I also agree with you in that bringing in a bigger name signing doesn’t make much sense with the buyouts.

I think acquiring McCann for the playoff run with Fiala and everybody else on the team warrants you the opportunity to formulate next years team. You can keep Fiala, if you dont like McCann or you can keep McCann and trade Fiala. Or keep them both at the expense of other players. Bottom line is McCann would be an excellent addition to this team this year.

Why is there so much trade talk surrounding Fiala? Minnesota is 2nd in their conference for points %, and seem as good as any other West team to go deep in the playoffs, so why are they trading their 3rd leading point producer?

They have $7.875MM coming off the books with the expired contracts of Goligoski and Rask, and add that to the $5.1MM from Fiala's contract expiring, and the team has $12.975MM to sign Fiala and replace Goligoski.

In season? Not a chance he moves.

During the offseason though? It's possible.

If we're realistically going to keep him; one of Zuccarello, Dumba or Talbot will need to be moved in order to keep him.

And despite what people think, it's not that we couldn't afford him. Because we can. It's that we wouldn't have enough left over after paying him to field a 22 man roster when we'd still have something like 5-6 spots to fill. Even with ELC's being used, we're still short by a couple spots.

Jeez, never mind, I figured it out myself, your dead cap goes up by $8MM. This was the why I was asking about.
