Plan to Contend Next Season as Management Intends Without Sacrificing Assets

Description
Management seems to want the best of both worlds: compete next season but also get younger and acquire draft capital. "Reset", so to speak -- a word they've used in the past.

Regardless of whether or not they should go this route (I personally think it's doable but it'll be very difficult), here's a general blueprint for what they need to do to achieve this.

1) RESIGN HERTL

Hertl needs to be resigned if this franchise seriously intends to compete next season. The good news is that talks seem to be going well. I think an 8x8mil deal gets done soon, possible an even better deal since it looks like SJ wants to sign Hertl but is also playing hardball financially.

2) TRADE OUT ANYONE ELSE AT THE TRADE DEADLINE (or offseason)

Trade out Cogliano, Bonino, Hill (NJD is said to be shopping for a goaltender and they wouldn't want a UFA or an old guy, I think Hill fits the bill here as he's set to come off of IR in the next week), Simek (add a mid-round draft pick if that's what it takes. His contract isn't immovable though, he's still a decent depth dman). You can move Barabanov to WSH for a 2nd and 3rd rounder, and that might be the better move, but he's a personal favorite of mine and SJ can use his creativity to create dynamite on a line with Strome and Nichushkin here. Labanc to the Isles (or somewhere else) for a late rounder for the cap space, otherwise he's a fine bet for a bounce-back year next season since this year he was strapped to Bonino and Weatherby -- two seriously offensively-challenged centers -- on bottom lines this year before getting injured.

3) WIN FREE AGENCY

This doesn't mean going out of your way to sign Bonino and Cogliano at the start of free agency and patting yourself on the back like they did last season. Or trading for Devon Dubnyk and Ryan Donato and thinking you've just outsmarted the entire league by acquiring two future Hall of Famers. Stop it with that nonsense. Sign high-impact players. Specifically ones that fit team needs. Strome and Nichuskin here would be perfect fits and would be very attainable at the cap hits listed. Marchment still has ties to the organization with his father Bryan not just being a former fan favorite Shark himself, but he currently works in management for San Jose. He also fills a team need by stabilizing the bottom lines a bit and adding that physical presence the coaching staff love (and probably rightly so since the Sharks seem to be missing it) while still having good skill.

4) BUYOUT VLASIC

This scenario has SJ being active with quality free agent signings, which is a necessity if they're to compete. They simply need the cap space to do this and buying out Vlasic helps in that regard even if it hurts.

this would be foolish but it’s probably close to what they want to do. my goal would be to sell assets including Hertl and suck really bad like montreal did this year, pick up a top 3 pick in 23 and get on of the Elite talents the 23 draft has to offer. a guy like Connor Bedard would replace Hertl value fairly quickly and has a higher ceiling.

Massive L on the labanc and Hill trades. Melnichuk is no where near ready for the NHL and hill has a contract for next year plus they gave up a 2nd for him. Don’t think they move on from him at that low of a return.

Bedard, Michkov or Fantilli would be awesome!

This team isn't going to compete for anything while Burns and Karlsson are taking up nearly $20M in cap space between the two of them. They need to figure out a way to dump one of them, preferably without retention.

There’s no way we can dump them without retention. Burns apparently has a good following around the league still and people in the nhl still like his game. He’s got 37 points in 50 games. Somehow he and Karlsson play worse when they are both in. If the sharks retain half they still save $4 mil a year and that’s a good chunk. Burns at $4 mil isn’t bad at all

I was wondering what Penguins fans would think of a Burns/Matheson swap (if Letang is set to walk).

I guess if the sharks retain nothing from Burns. I’d rather just retain and get the roster spot. Matheson also has 1 more year than Burns on his deal.

No team in the NHL or you think 6 points in 21 games and now injured Lebanc is worth his 4.75m contract. That's on the Sharks.

ok but if we do that we won’t find a burns replacement that’s even close to his production and now we have an inferior RD making 4 mil plus burns 4 mil and we’ve gained nothing

Labanc to the Isles (or somewhere else) for a late rounder for the cap space is very reasonable. GMs know that he's a fine bet for a bounce-back year next season since this year he was strapped to Bonino and Weatherby -- two seriously offensively-challenged centers, to put it lightly -- on the bottom lines this year, grinding away in BB's system, before getting injured (he doesn't have an injury history either and is still young).

It's a major overreaction based on this year's stats to think that he can't even be flipped as a cap dump. Sure, I agree he doesn't net back a late 1st or 2nd anymore, but there'll be takers for a 3rd and easily be takers for less than that.

Well, at the current rate, I wouldn't draft Michkov with a high pick, and regardless, he is signed in the KHL until the end of the 2026 season.

He’s a franchise changing player immediately and if he’s signed that long and won’t come over until then what does it matter what’s going on right now? I sure hope it’s over by then.

If they make truly good moves to bring in depth scoring then I think they won’t miss his production. They have to move on from old expensive players. If you can get something for him, do it. He’s defied all aging odds thus far but who knows next season, he could pull a Vlasic and crater and then you are guaranteed to not be able to get anything for him.

so? he is a fan favorite and a great locker room guy and you can’t replace 25+ min and 40+ points on the blue line under 6 mil a year, our best bet is to hope with his insane physical fitness routine that he fades slowly and is still an 18-20 min 39-35 point guy in 3 years.

Yeah and if he turns into a Vlasic we have another huge problem as we have with Vlasic now. An immovable contract that will cost to get rid of for years.

except Burns is still playing at a high level and has only 3 years left on his deal. i don’t see him dropping off much next year so at worst it’s 2 years of a bad deal, where Vlasic has been bad for pretty much the entirety of his deal.
