We roll our top 9 fairly evenly. GREEF line has been playing the prototypical "checking 3rd line" while Boldy and Fiala have been playing the prototypical "scoring 2nd line". It's not that he's better then Ek, it's just that Ek fits the checking role a lot better and has incredible chemistry with Greenway and Foligno.

It'll be interesting to see if Guerin makes any more moves. I had a hard time seeing us re-signing Sturm unless one of Fiala, Dumba, or Talbot were for sure gone, and maybe slotting Jost where you have him can bring out some offensive upside. Basically gave the Aves the better PK-er for a guy with term. I'm ok with it and am interested to see how it'll play out.

Trust me, this team needed a change. Sturm had sucked. So has our 1st and 2nd line alot lately. Merrill and Alex G has sucked. So much is wrong with this team, it needed something

I think this trade has more to do with next season. Guerin just found Fiala’s “replacement” for next season when the cap crunch hits in full effect.

Don't mind the move at all. Sturm probably wasn't going to be resigned next year and he wasn't playing much right now anyway. Jost adds nice flexibility with a bit more scoring touch/better hands than Sturm. Big fan of Sturm but sure wish he had shown more growth after last year vs regression.

BG go out and get a grit defenseman now for like a 3rd.

Maybe it’s just me, but what about Jost between Kaprizov and Zucc? They’ve needed more ability to drive the play defensively and Jost seems very much like a younger Hartman.

I see the Boldy Fiala line as the main driver lately. Not sure why you change that up AND that’s where coaches favorite plays.

That's not entirely accurate though. Jost is better defensively than Sturm despite being smaller. Both at 5v5 and on the PK.

Aves more or less got the cheaper player, that's it. This gives them the wiggle room needed to make another big move. Giroux, possibly.

For the Wild, Jost is the better player. He's also 3 years younger and has another year of control.

Jost also has offensive upside that Sturm did not. It sure sounds like Hartman or Freddy are going to be spending time in the bottom 6 soon. At least to give Jost a shot.

What stats are you looking at? Sturm has better possession and rate metrics than Jost while short handed while also being better at faceoffs and taking more in his defensive zone.

Despite playing an additional 20 seconds more on the PK and a 1:16 more at even strength Jost still carries a positive +/- rating. Sturm does not, he's in the negative range.

+/- is typically useless, unless it's used in this context. Jost clearly wins there.

Furthermore, possession and rate metrics only quantify OFFENSIVE production. It doesn't really cover defensive play.

I only mentioned PK, I think you brought up even strength, but I do think using TOI and +/- for PK is still pretty pointless. And even if things like corsi are more about offense (it does include blocked shots, so not entirely offense), wouldn't it be fair to assume controlling the puck and being able to turn that into offense while short handed may be indicative of better defensive play? Either way, I think Sturm's faceoffs and dZs% will make him a more valuable PK-er for Colorado. You could look at things as simple as goals against while on the ice short handed and Jost has been on the ice for 23 against compared to Sturm's 15.

I know JFresh cards are popular with people here and even these agree with what I'm saying that Sturm is better on the PK, more than I would've imagined TBH.

That's interesting, I didn't think it would be far apart either.

But possession and rate metrics are less useful than hits, blocks, giveaways, and takeaways for defensive comparisons.

Jost:
Hits - 44
Bks - 29
Gv - 9
Tk - 29

Sturm:
Hits - 61
Bks - 22
Gv - 11
Tk - 6

Sturm definitely hits more and is better at faceoffs. But Jost blocks more shots, gives the puck up less, and is really good at getting the puck back/takeaways.

Either way. I've liked Jost and wanted him on the Wild for awhile now, and am happy with the trade. Even though I will miss Sturm. I'm good with it.

Well dang, I like Jost's takeaway numbers there. And yeah, I like Jost too. I thought about how the Wild could get him last offseason, but didn't think prying him off a division rival was feasible. Makes sense that Colorado goes for it while Kadri is having a career year considering his expiring contract, though.

Here's to hoping Jost can find some chemistry at C with one of our top couple lines!
