LA would be dumb to not take Kulak off waivers. Hes sneaky good, one of the more underrated players on the Habs. A 2nd is an overpayment though.

Agreed on a regular basis but in this market before the deadline, yes. Look at what Hagel and Chiarot got.

Yeah but Hoffman is making 4.5 mil for a couple more years. If he was half retained than maybe he could fetch a 1st; but full contract I doubt you get more than a depth pick

The only trade that's even remotely feasible is the Lehkonen trade

Weber's contract is worth 25M$ in savings for the Coyotes owners over the next 4 years.

They're gonna play in a 5000 seat arena next years because they didn't pay their rent over the last few years.

Weber's contract is worth nothing to the other 31 teams.

He isn’t worth exactly 25 mill, they still do have to pay a good bit of money. I don’t think the return is that much anyways, I mean it also benefits Montreal to get rid of that contract. A win win deal for both teams to make the change, so I don’t think that Arizona adds a valuable asset like this

The value is in Arizona being able to reach the floor without actually having to pay a lot in actual salary. On that 25M, Weber is only owed 6M after this season. Thats a massive bargain for a team who’s struggling financially like Arizona. Habs can easily just leave Weber on LTIR til his contract his done. 6M is pocket change for Molson plus its probably paid by insurance anyways. A 2nd round pick is conservative imo.

The Coyotes can also reach the cap floor by, for example, taking on bad contracts where they get paid assets to do so. I think they are going to attempt to reach the cap floor, they’ll prefer to do it in a way that doesn’t cost them assets for someone they won’t play

They have 9 second round picks in the next 3 drafts. Not having to pay millions for a team in financial difficulty whos going to play in a 5000 person arena is worth a lot

That’s true, but if the team has money struggles the league does still hand them over some money to keep them from folding. Arizona would likely be able to find a contract of a player who a team wants to dump that’s set up like Weber but for a guy who actually plays (idk how they are set up but Zaitsev/Vlasic are options)

They have to pay him 6M over the next 4 years, but he counts for over 31M on the cap. That's how they save 25M and reach the cap floor.

Also, it doesn't benefit us at all if we keep him or not. He's on LTIR and doesn't count on our cap space.

Who would he replace in the lineup? Anderson, Bjornfot, or Edler. The Kings have Maatta as well, who has been playing really well this season, and they also have Moverare and Wolanin that have been really good while covering for injuries. Claiming Kulak would require subjecting a better or younger defenseman of their own to waivers.

If Montreal put Kulak on waivers first and he cleared, I could see the Kings giving up a 4th or 5th round pick for him to stash in Ontario as a depth option who could be called up in the event of an injury. Uncleared Kulak provides zero value to LA, as they would just end up having to subject him to waivers a few days later.
