Description

Marino is the best defenseman in the trade
Boeser is the best forward in the trade

Value-wise I feel like they're even 1 for 1, but positionally Pens need D. Myers at 4mil is serviceable but definitely not a replacement.

Kapanen is definitely not a replacement for Boeser, but a positional stop-gap.

Zucker is to make the cap situation work

Hoglander is the sweetener for the addition of Kapanen as well as the extra year on Myers.

Absolutely not. Pens decline easily. The pens don’t need defense. If the pens need defense then the last thing they should do is trade a top 4 RHD and replace him with a cap dump 6th D.
Right now:
Young Top 4 RHD signed to a long term favorable contract > young 2nd line forward with a terrible QO and rental for the pens.
Young middle 6 forward > young middle 6 forward right now. Hoglander is probably better long term but short term just no.
Overpaid Middle 6 forward for 2 years > overpaid bottom pair defenseman for 3 years.
No longer having even 1 top 4 RHD signed next year is not ideal for the pens who are likely going to trade one of Dumo or Pettersson to hopefully sign at least 2 of their big free agents. Then also taking on Boeser who they definitely can’t afford just screams terrible idea.
