CHI would need a guaranteed 1st. But you could add another pick that "becomes a 1st if Kane resigns with Buffalo".

Edit: forgot resign conditions weren't allowed anymore. But you could still handshake deal something along those lines.

Sabres are not ready to make a run and Kane is getting old. It doesnt make sense for the sabes to give up a significant number of assets to get him.

Sabres are probably worse after this trade tbh. Also, you can't add signing conditions in trades anymore.

I appreciate that clarification. I guess it would be " If Sabres make playoffs, pick becomes 2023 1st". I mean, Asplund is an incredible 2-way forward, but Kane is a massive upgrade over Olofsson. Same spot on the PP, and he's still over a point/game on a bottom team. Losing Asplund would hurt PK, but the emergence of Tage on the PK so far has been solid, and I would expect JJ to develop into a PK role.

I can agree on the significant number of assets, but I think he has every reason to move on from Chicago at this point in his career, and the Sabres are loaded with young talent at both forward and defense. Having a guy who's won multiple cups and grew up in Buffalo is a win-win to try and push now. Plus, I would expect them to give him an extension

But how much longer ill Kane be an upgrade? One, two years, maybe? The Sabres finally feel like they are in a stable place with their team. If they are going to trade to make an upgrade I would hope that its for a player in their mid-20s.

The Kane trade is mostly for fun, if not I would sign Olofsson to a 4 x 4.75AAV and wouldn't be signing Marchment because that's Asplund's spot. Manson is Power's vet d-partner and will smack around anyone who tries to bully him, plus can play PK minutes. I think of Koskinen as a Finnish leader for UPL that can be a 1A/1B with him.

I see next year as pushing for a playoff spot, but probably just missing it. Kane will be 34 in November, so give him a 2-year extension here in Buff (3-year if you need to entice him). There's no reason to believe he cant be an impact player for two more years, and I would expect to start to see a decline in that 2nd year of his extension if he decided to stay. By 2023-2024, Sabres should be in playoffs and Kane's leadership and prowess would be needed.

I would be Ok if the Sabres signed him as a UFA for 2 years, but I still dont see a value in giving up assets to get him next season.

Leadership in the playoffs? A guy who has won 3 cups and is 34? Yeahhh... not saying I'd catch an Uber with him, but he knows how to win in the playoffs more than most players in the entire league

Let's suppose that Kane wants out of Chicago, because of rebuild, and somehow he chooses Buffalo as destination.
What is Chicago expecting for their troubles ?
They are shredding 10 mil AAV, player does not want to play for then, they need to tank. Couple picks and some B level prospects ? Why would Sabres pay anything significant in the summer for Kane, if they can wait till deadline and get him for late 1st if they are in deed in playoffs hunt ?
