Hughes Heroes

Created by: jonh514
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 26, 2022
Published: Apr. 26, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hughes was clear in his first press conference that his focus was going to be bringing in players who play with speed of body, hockey sense and reflexes.

All trades/offer sheets here oriented toward either cap dumps or bringing in more players in the mold of "Hughes ideal style".

Draft

-Shane Wright

Trade

-Weber to 'Yotes for nothing. Mutually beneficial, but without trade value as no other team would want this. (CAP DUMP)
-Habs pay a 1st to dump Drouin and Armia in Seattle. Seattle takes a chance that maybe they can rehab one or both of them, and if not they flex their cap to get a 1st. (CAP DUMP)
-Habs send Petry home closer(ish) to his wife's family in Texas
-Habs bring in a top line LW in Kyle Connor, paying dearly in the process. This is one of the fastest skaters in the league who scores often using his wicked wrister. (HUGHES HERO)

Offer Sheet

-Hard to match offer to Kempe in hopes of securing him in a 2nd line role. This is officially the second fastest skater in the league and he may have as good a shot as Connor. (HUGHES HERO)

Guhle is considered to be a future top 2 dman... so he's the real prize in this deal. What do you think would get it done if the Jets would consider it, keeping in mind Habs will trade just about anyone but Suzuki or Caufield.

I mean the jets may move a guy but I doubt its conner and not for that offer. If you're willing to shell out 8.5 million on a winger chase Forsberg and keep those picks.

The whole fun of this exercise was to explore our GMs desire to be the fastest team in the league. Connor and Kempe are two of the fastest and that's the exercise here. Not to make the best "hockey business" decisions, but to gather the speediest players to Montreal. Sorry I was not more clear about that in the description.

Petry's contract is hardly affordable, And Kyle Connor gets away better offer than that.

That is an insane amount of money for Kempe, absolutely unearned so far. I like him but he has one season over 40pts in no world is someone giving that much salary/term and a 2023 1st rounder for him.
Not enough for Connor, Guhle and the 1st is a good start but not enough.
MTL is not trading any 1st round picks , they're rebuilding they are going to hold onto any good picks.

It's 3 X 1st round picks essentially. Dvorak was a 1st (and that's also what the habs paid to get him). Guhle was a fist and most GMs would drool at the prospect of getting him. The FLA pick is late but it's still a 1st. Kempe was selected 29th overall and 2023 is a good draft year.

That's why the Kings won't match... he's the 2nd fastest skater in the league and scored 35 goals... he's gonna be pricey.

Thats why no NHL team will offer that... nobody is giving Kempe 8.2M a year when he's had one good year, yes he's at 35G but he's also in a contract year and a lot players up their game in contract years. Also No bottom feeder team is going to offer sheet and lose their possibility at a top 5 next year.

By taking Little's contract at the TDL, Arizona shouldn't have much trouble making the floor. If they do want to add more, they can add Ferland's contract and get compensated for the dump.

If they were going to take Weber's contract then they won't take it for free -- they got Nathan Smith (currently their 2C, but probably projects as a 3C in the league) for Little's contract.

I think the difference is that for Weber they get 7.5M on the cap and it's gonna cost them 3M year 1, 1M year 2, 1M year 3. Not sure about Little/Ferland, but Weber's contract is an artifact of a time gone by. The ability to spend ~6M (averaged) under the cap for 3 years may have value for a team playing in front of 5000 fans. But if I'm wrong, I'm totally ok with that. I don't think the Habs need to move Weber either because 5 Million in dead cash over 3 years does not affect them much. I doubt they will pay to move that contract. Price on the other hand...

First of all we absolutely aren’t trading Connor I have no idea how that got in your head, and even if we were that offer for Connor is insulting
