Using the Friedge rumours to build a Raptors trade

Created by: MP55
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 15, 2022
Published: May 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
To acquire Kawhi Masai Ujiri sent off Demar Derozan (fan favourite and one of the faces of the franchise), Jakob Poetl (young center prospect, top 10 pick a couple years prior), and a first round pick for Kawhi Leonard (superstar on expiring contract) and Danny Green (veteran on expiring contract that filled team needs).

Using the same framework, I’ve put together a trade for another star, JT Miller, who would be the perfect fit to get this leafs team over the hump. In this trade:
Miller = Leonard
Schenn = Green
Nylander = Derozen
Lilgegren = Poetl

Not sure which way the second round pick should be going but it’s there.

This is awful... Leafs need Liljegren to be a cheap, productive RD and he had a fantastic rookie season. I wouldn't trade Nylander for Miller 1 for 1 and I sure as hell wouldn't give Lilly up for Schenn + a 2nd

🤣 🤣 🤣 I listen to that segment after everyone talked about it. That's not what he meant. "Summer of kawhi" is more of a headline to grab peoples attention. What he said was he thinks toronto wants to get a player to play top 6 and help Tavares. Someone annoying and tenacious. A few names that I'm just going to throw out there without evidence..... beauvillier, konecny. Someone like that you know? I could think of a few more, but you understand what type of player?

Ya Canucks decline. They can get better offers and won’t retain on Miller AND give up a 2nd

Ah I get it. I just heard people talking about it on this site and on Twitter and thought he actually was thinking Dubas was gonna try and pull something like that to really get this team over the hump. those guys you mention make a lot of sense, and could fit the cap picture too once Mrazek and Holl are dumped.

Yknow what I think it takes skill to put together a trade both canvases despise 🤣 was thinking one would hate it (wasn’t sure which one probably leads cause I’ve seen JaredofLondon on this site a ton and know very well how he feels about the leafs players) but I’m kinda shocked both hate this 😂

Every non-Canucks fan thinks Miller's value has dropped by 50% since the trade deadline passed. I mean yes, his value isn't as high as it was before the trade deadline, but it hasn't dropped by 50%, because the seismic package that everyone said he could fetch at the deadline? Apparently no team was willing to offer it up. Secondly, Miller is too valuable of an asset even as a rental to fetch less than a 1st and an A-prospect

Wording it as Miller = Leonard was poor on my part. Wanted to put together a trade based on my opinion of both players that represented an upgrade of a player on the Toronto end (Derozan, Nylander) to another player (Leonard, Miller) that could help the leafs more in all three phases of the game and especially in the playoffs.

Realistically how much better is Miller than those 2 if we're being objective, and you have to take into consideration that the other 2 are in their prime when Miller is going to exit it. But yeah they have lots of cap issues here. Nice Profile picture btw

Haha thank you! I think Miller is an upgrade over Nylander in terms of consistency and can also provide the leafs that size and grit that is so important throughout the playoffs. He can win puck battles down low and along the boards where we saw Nylander struggle with throughout the playoffs. Yeah he’s about to exit his prime, but who knows how much longer this leafs window is open for? Auston Matthews is a UFA the years after Miller and there’s no guarantees he’s gonna resign here, so I think there may need to be a little bit of urgency with the leafs to go on a playoff run.

Even so, it doesnt help the leafs in a meaningful way. Basketball and hockey work very differently and the upgrade from derozan to leonard is much more meaningful than from nylander to miller. Especially since the gap isnt near as big.
Then add in the downgrade on defence and the fact that the leafs still need to address the same roster holes they already had and its just not viable

Both a good players, I've just always been a big Nylander guy. I don't think Miller is as good bit that's just my opinion. Agreed that they need more size, preferably defensively. Does Philip Myers interest them? They swapped him and biega at the deadline so they could see him with the Marlies. More net crashers are important though, that needs to be throughout the lineup. Almost all players on Tampa do it. That's why they are back to back Champs.

Phil Myers could be interesting. Only issue with him is he’s making quite a bit of money for a team as cap strapped as the leafs to feel comfortable stomaching

Don't quote me on this, but I believe there's something weird with his contract that if he gets bought out the team actually gains cap space? If that's true then I could see him being dealt to let's say Vegas to be bought out, then signed to 1m. Or they could swap him and holl while evening the salaries (Nash retains 550k)

Canucks can do better. They aren't paying a 2nd AND retaining.
