Wish we had another late 1st to fit here, but that pick is 2nd overall. So Devils say no thank you.

Absolutely not.
We’ll take Cooley, and find a UFA winger like Val or Burakovsky and let Minnesota deal with cap hell instead

I don't see the Devils moving that pick now that it's 2nd overall, but there was probably a shot when it was 5th overall. Seems like Ottawa is the most likely destination. I also wouldn't be surprised if he ended up in Anaheim.

Something like that. I've put out the idea of Fiala and Addison for 10 OA and Perrault which I think could be interesting.

Fiala to NJ had a chance at 5th OA

No chance at 2nd OA

Probably depends on contract. If he wants to test the UFA market next year, or even sign 2-3 year term, the 10th would be tall ask. He probably ends up on Eastern conf contender in that case.

I don’t think Lou goes for him. That leaves Ottawa

Maybe CAR, FLA, NYR, etc if he wants to get to UFA sooner
(He is a year from UFA)

I would expect Fiala will be willing to sign a long deal - why wouldn’t he? He bet on himself last off-season while going to arbitration hoping to cash in and then he went out and became a top 25 scorer in the league. I can’t see anyones agent not wanting to cash a long term contract on that success and avoid a down season, injury etc.
On the #5 overall maybe but #2 no way business…if the devils have talked themselves into him then why not? Or maybe they then swing a deal with to swap firsts with Ottawa? I’ll be curious to see how it all works out as I don’t actually see a ton of difference in value this draft between 2-5 or so. It certainly takes some patience to draft a guy like Cooley over plugging Fiala in right away. (I am not sure there is consensus on Cooley as the second best pick either, but we’ll see on that too)

Fiala might have gotten the 5th overall pick, but he sure as hell isn't getting the 2nd overall pick.

Even with Guerin showing his whole ass today in his presser? Idk man seems optimistic. We'll see, obviously. I think the Devils are very interested

He's a 25 year PPG forward that scored 30 more than goals this season. As our beat writer said in his today article: "If [Fiala were to be available], there will be no shortage of teams ringing Guerin’s cell phone." Put it this way, if we don't get a high pick or A prospect for Fiala, Guerin needs to be fired. Devils fans would be livid if they were in the same situation with Bratt and Fitzgerald moved him for a late 1st and B prospect.

I mean, if we literally couldn’t afford him that’s basically what I’d expect just based on precedent. Cap casualties kill returns.
