Initial Creation Date: May 18, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Definitely setting the team up to have the ability to sell some assets at the deadline and keeping two of the three retained salary spots available. Taking some not so great contracts from contenders as a lot of teams will be looking for more financial flexibility. This allows Seattle to add more picks and build up a prospect pool.

Major overpay on the Avs trade. Dunn would be a 3rd pairing guy in Colorado and would not get any PP time. Avs are better off giving a similar contract to a guy like Manson and keeping their 2023 1st, best defensive prospect, decent forward prospect, and EJ.

WTH is that COL trade? Vince Dunn would be like the 5th best dman on COL get zero power play time and they are expected to trade a dman that fills his roll significantly better, the Avs top d prospect a forward prospect and a 1st. I’ve seen some bad value trades on here but this is up there. Seriously I want to understand how a) you decided the Avs would want Dunn knowing already under contract for next year they have Makar, Toews, Byram, and Girard b) how you think Dunn is worth that package?

The Flyers will throw in JVR as well but lets bump that pick up to a 3rd. Lindblom and JVR for one of your 3rds.

I am personally not a huge stanley fan. I think that could make sense if Seattle got a 6th(ish) back as well. I personally think Geekie is a little better

The reason for Colorado doing this trade is to 1.) clear EJ's contract to have the opportunity to sign some of Burakovsky, Nichuskin, Kadri, kuemper or possibly even manson. 2.) Dunn has played both sides throughout his career so he is very lineup flexible in that sense 3.) manson will likely cost a lot more than 2.6 next season and get a 3-6 yr deal in all likelihood, that is not something appealing for a team needing to sign Mac next offseason 4.) Dunn gets the RS and is under team control (rfa) after he expires so while he's technically a rental but could be moved out if needed 5.) the retained salary, cap clearing and acquiring dunn will cost assets but if Colorado actually wants to win again beyond this season, you sometimes have to dip into your futures to do so.

Yeah that’s not happening. Makar, Toews, Girard, Byram are all better than Dunn. All of those guys are more likely to play on the PP than Dunn. So really what the Avs would need is someone for their PK. Which to my knowledge is not Dunn’s strong suit.

EJ is still a competent NHL defenseman and is overpaid by a few million for one more year. The Avs aren’t in a huge cap crunch this summer, that will be summer 2023. You don’t clear your prospect pool out to save $4M for one year.

Again using Manson as an example: someone like him probably gets around a 4x$4.5? He’s a better role fit for Colorado given that he’s a PK guy. AND you get to keep your top defensive prospect, a 1st, and a decent forward prospect. I think that’s worth the trade off.

I get what you’re trying to do, but this is both a huge overvalue of Dunn and not a good fit for where Colorado is.

Leafs are moving down about 10 picks, it’s not really giving up a first plus trade.

I'm going to disagree with my fellow Caps fan above and say that Washington declines this. Donato is expiring this offseason so I don't see why a team would be sending a large sum for that, considering that sign and trades are incredibly rare. For the player himself, he'll be due a raise this offseason and Washington already has someone who does what Donato can, only better in Sheary, who's locked up and is cheaper.

I would assume part of this is predicated on Hagelin being a dump, however there currently isn't a need to deal with Hagelin in his current state. He's struggling with depth perception issues in his injured eye and it's not known if he will even play again, leaving the large possibility that he will stay on LTIR and his contract will not be an issue. The combination of dump and perceived upgrade are certainly not worth sending away a mid 2nd round pick for when you have a plethora of prospects that can easily do what the Caps would bring in Donato for.

I did change dunn off to a different city bc I didn’t consider the fact that Byram (should) + hopefully will take a step up next yr in ice time and impact. The part I disagree with his extending manson like that given the players up front plus the goalie they should resign when some great PK/ second or Third pair guys come much cheaper around the league. EJ is probably about a 2M dollar defenseman at this point not a 6M dollar defenseman so he probably does need to get dumped or bought out whatever it needs to be. Burakovsky, kuemper, lehkonen and Nichuskin are very valuable to the roster. Kadri is also important but I think it is almost certain he can be much better compensated elsewhere next season

Yeah I agree with you, I would prefer adding at forward rather than adding more at defense. Ideally the Avs can find a nice PK guy for the bottom pairing at like $2M and then extend Nuke. Might need to find a 2C also
