youth supplements the aging core

Created by: staytru20
Team: 2022-23 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 1, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assumptions:

- Backstrom is out for the season, if not longer. Could be a LTIRetiree
- Wilson will be out until January
- Hagelin's eye injury was career ending.

About:

- Protas/Snively holds down a spot on the wing until Wilson comes back.
- Varlamov might be the right mentor for his fellow russian Ilya Samsonov. Regardless, the Caps should find a new goalie coach, IMO.
- Scheifele wants out and I've seen Iorio + 1st for him on this site a couple of times. The bones of the package make sense, and the Caps can absorb his entire salary.

Question Marks:

Tarik El-Bashir from The Athletic seems to think that both Lucas Johansen and Alex Alexeyev will get a shot at 3LD. There is a possibility that the Caps go after a mid-20s veteran for that spot next to TvR, or potentially another right shot defenseman that can take some PP minutes from Carlson.

The middle six is really young outside of Scheifele and Mantha while Wilson is out. Snively was effective when he was healthy, but he's basically a Sheary clone

  1. 2023 3rd round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Think the value will be a late third for Eller. He's coming off a rather tough year, but he's been effective historically.
SEA
  1. Eller, Lars
Additional Details:
Really, any team that wants a 3C. Doesn't have to be Seattle.
2.
WSH
  1. Scheifele, Mark
Additional Details:
Caps get a solid offensive center back to fill the void created by Backstrom.
WPG
  1. Iorio, Vincent
  2. 2023 1st round pick (WSH)
Additional Details:
I'd be surprised if the Jets got both the Caps #1 RD prospect AND the 2022 1st.

After last night I think isles can get more for Varly lol. Is Alexeyev any good? Isles need a lefty d man and he could speak Russian with Soroky.

He’s a head case and I wouldn’t want him in the room if I was a capitals fan.

There's probably enough there to at least get the Jets talking.

he's likely the Caps' best LD prospect currently now that Fehervary graduated to full NHL time. Johansen could be trade bait though.

I think the core group of vets are guys that could help influence Scheifele in the positive direction if that were true

I think this is fair value for scheifle but I also think both that NHL GM's will pay more for him than I would and that he is not the right kind of center the caps should go after. Even when Wilson comes back 7 mil is a lot of space that they should spend on somebody if backstrom and hags really are done.
