Why would the leafs trade an 80 point player for a goalie who hasnt been good in over 3 years with a terrible contract?

This should be the basis, he's a struggling player with multi year deal and injury issues

Because they aren't getting anything done in the playoffs with the current roster and Gibson is still a top tier goalie,

Right, Arizona loves their IR guys, they make the cap floor and insurance pays the salary. win win.

Kane should be getting closer to 6.5-7.5M x 4/5 imo. Also Mrazek is gonna probably cost at least a 3rd and maybe a later pick to move that contract, I think a buyout is the smarter option.

Injury prone =/= permanently on LTIR. If Arizona wants to make the cap floor they can get a way better deal by taking on someone like Seabrook

Nylander for Gibson doesn't really make sense for either team even if you discount the half of the Toronto fanbase that doesn't think Gibson is worth acquiring at all.

Toronto loses (and effectively gives up any chance at re-signing) an excellent player who, despite all the criticism of being "soft," has been an essential part of why you guys have made the playoffs the last few seasons. It would make much more sense for the Maple Leafs to take a chance and re-sign Jack Campbell for up to $5.5 million AAV.

Anaheim loses its starting goaltender for at least the next three years and maybe five in exchange for an excellent player that WON'T get them to the playoffs in either of the next two seasons.

Gibson has had bottom of the league numbers for three seasons in a row now, and the year before that he was simply 'good'. He hasnt been a top tier goalie in forever and downgrading massivly at the issue (scoring) while getting worse goaltending isnt going to help anything but the leafs opponents

I agree but he has been saying he wants to win and play for a team that is ready to win now, Toronto has potential for a fit but he will need to take a pay cut to make that happen. Look at the tams that are close, Tampa, Colorado, Edmonton, NYR. hes not getting 7mill from any of them.

The ducks cant score and needs players who can, Toronto needs someone who can stay healthy and stop a puck, I see a very good fit here.

the leafs currently need another top 6 center or LW, after this trade they need a a RW too and then they have a goalie who cant stop a puck and has a massive bad contract. Like i said before, Gibson has literally been at the bottom of the league in every goalie stat you can name for 3+ years. He is bad.
