2nd Overall Pick Trades

For the purpose of this ACGM, I am evaluating which players the New Jersey Devils SHOULD trade for.

The 4 main categories that I am using to determine if Devils should make the trade. These were stated/implied by either trustworthy analysts or GMTF himself
1. Age (between 20-26)
2. Contract (signed long term or RFA)
3. Need (Devils need top line winger and starting goalie)
4. Fit (Devils need bigger body players like Geertsen)

The players I am using for this are playing that are either in trade rumors, traded for the 2nd overall pick in ACGM, or my own ideas.

Im not including any trade downs as Devils were looking for an "impact player" so trading down doesn't help much.

For this, I am evaluating this if the 2nd overall pick is the MAiN piece in the trade. I AM aware that some of these players are worth more than the 2nd overall pick and some are worth less.

Also, Im NOT taking into consideration other teams needs. I AM aware that players like Tkachuk, Demko, etc are not available. Looking at this from Devils perspective.

**Basically this is "If ___ team offered __ player to the Devils for the 2nd overall pick, should the Devils say yes"**

28 year old John Gibson has struggled over the past couple of years so he isn't worth the 2nd overall pick in my opinion. Rather target a younger goalie

Although Chychurn is a good defensemen, his value is inflated due to his good contract, Devils aren't one of those teams that would overpay for his value contract

BOS

If extension = Yes
No extension = No

Pasta is a top 5 winger in the league so its a no brainer IF Pasta resigns once the trade is finalized. Devils wouldn't trade the pick if it was 1 year of Pasta

NJD

Tkachuk, Matthew [RFA Rights]

CGY

Yes

Matthew Tkachuk is one of the best power forward in the league and would be a perfect fit next to Hughes

CHI

Yes

DeBrincat is one of the best goal scorers in the league. Although I would prefer a bigger player (like Tkachuk), Cat would fit along Hughes well

NJD

Fiala, Kevin [RFA Rights]

MIN

No

Fiala is a very good player but his value isn't worth the 2nd overall pick due to the Wild's cap problems. I could see the Devils trading 2023 protected first + prospect for Fiala but not 2nd overall pick

MTL

No

Yes

Devils focus on their team needs and go after a goalie. The thing about Saros that I like is his contract, age, and fit. Very reasonable contract, at a solid age and obviously fits what the Devils are looking for

SJS

No/Maybe

Meier does fit the team need and playing style that the Devils are looking for but I prefer some of the other options more than Meier based on talent and contract.

TOR

No

The main problem with a Nylander trade is his contract. This trade could turn out horribly for the Devils if Nylander decides to leave after 2 years. I rather trade for a team controlled RFA or sign a current UFA opposed to trading this much for two years of Nylander

VAN

No

Miller doesn't fit the age range or contract standards that the Devils are looking for. Even if Miller decides to resign, he is too old for the Devils timeline and wants to get paid as a 1C (which Devils don't want to do)

Nothing about the value at all, the main reason for the decline is team fit. If we are going purely off of value, Devils say yes. But Hughes is an offensive defensemen which the Devils have an abundance of. If Quinn wants to join his brothers in 5 years, we'll gladly take him. But as of right now, Devils shouldn't trade for a player that doesn't fit what they are looking for.

Flashbacks to the Cory Schneider trade, Vancouver trades a young goalie to the Devils for a top pick. The reasoning for this trade is the same as the Saros trade. Good contract, desperate need, and age.

Would be curious as to what the Devils actually would need to move on from this pick knowing that Wright or Slafkovsky are available

I would say goalie or nothing and take best player available, possibly a helly and 14 for 2 and daws. Or something along those lines.

F*ck no on DAL giving up their first for Petry. We have our old D-man in Suter.

Also the offer is bad. Mediocre picks, mid-6er and a 3rd goalie ain't what NJ needs, the offer is just straight bad. It's no better than NJ giving up Mukhamadullin, Top10 protected 2023 1st, Zacha and Daws for first overall to put it into perspective.

Helle is a little too old and doesn't have enough term to be worth it
Demko and Saros are better options but the Helle trade isn't too bad
