The most I would give for Gibson

Created by: GenXHockey
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 23, 2022
Published: Jun. 13, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm sure this will rile up ducks fans. But even this trade is iffy at best. Gibson hasn't been good for the past 3 seasons. I'm not sure if rolling the dice on him is a smart move by Toronto.

By no means am I saying that this is the trade the ducks need to accept.

Needs to be some retention in there. For that much going back a good amount too. Goalies on a good day don't carry value and Gibby hasn't been good in 3 years

Well, then, thank goodness he won't play for you guys, who would just claim it was all his fault that you couldn't win in the playoffs, just like it was Cody Ceci's, and Nikita Zaitsev's before him.

Too much term to retain. As I said in the description this is the absolute most I could take dubas giving without vomiting. (It's what I meant to say anyway lol)

Leafs adding a 6.4m pedestrian goalie is not in my playbook. But I'm sure there are going to be plenty of bad trades both ways after the reports that surfaced.

Oh, c'mon now. I never blamed either of those two. Average players on bad contracts.

I just can't justify sending anything more with gibsons play over the last 3 seasons. Hell even Woll outplayed him in his 4 games.

No such thing. Too much to retain 50% for no value going back maybe but 1.4 to 2ish absolutely not

Teams don't want to retain for that kind of term. Look at the headaches kessel's retention caused. Ducks will be competitive before Gibson expires.

Coming from a Ducks fan, this is the last move the leafs should make.

Buyout Mrazek, give Campbell a 5Mx5 contract. Cap hit of Mrazek buyout and Campbell contract are at or below Gibsons AAV for the 5 years and you keep the premium assets it is going to take to get Gibson

I said "you guys," not "you." Thousands if not more Maple Leaf fans, both on CapFriendly and in media outlets, spent more time than you and I have left collectively on this planet complaining about Zaitsev and Ceci.

Gibson should go, if he goes at all, to a team that is structured properly and has a realistic chance of winning the Stanley Cup, not an iceberg team like Edmonton or Toronto. Colorado, Pittsburgh, Washington, Detroit -- even Ottawa -- would be better places for him to land.

For a team that operates on an internal budget well below the salary cap there is 1000% too much term to retain on Gibson in any deal

I think the leafs would rather waive mrazek and eat the 2.65m x 2 rather than have dead cap when Matthews marner and nylander need new deals. That is if the price to move him is ridiculous.

But yes, I agree. Not a smart move for the leafs.

I absolutely agree this is not the move either, I don’t see the Leafs going after Gibson.

But 5x5 for Campbell would be a terrible idea that will age poorly. Jack is a middle of the pack goalie (numbers back it up) I fully believe they will walk away from him.

For me, Varlamov will be starting in net for the Leafs. With Comrie backing him up

Was less about actually giving Campbell that deal and more to show you could spend 5M on any goalie to the same effect.

Varly definitely seems like the best target for the Leafs to me

No one's been able to drag a solid confirmation out anywhere (a Lou Lamoriello organization guarding its secrets close? shocking!) but Varly's got half the league on an NTC and the strongest rumors I've heard have all 7 Canadian teams + the Capitals making up half of that list. Could all be BS & subterfuge, but I think the Leafs are going to have to give Lou a godfather deal to make him lean on Varly to waive that NTC.

If Petruzzelli goes to camp with comrie... comrie will lose his job.

I just don’t see them committing long term to any goalie next year. It will either be with a goalie on an expiring deal (Varlamov, Quick) or an RFA goalie (Blackwood, Samsonov Georgiev) or FA (MAF, Murray if bought out, Comrie)

I love that take and hope that’s true, huge Petruzzelli fan. Didn’t have the greatest run the ECHL playoffs but was a stud in the reg season.

Interesting to see how the Leafs staff sees him tho

Varlamov just seems to be such a perfect fit. If I was a Leafs fan he would be on the top of my wish list this summer

Varlamov
Blackwood
Campbell

Top three options for the Leafs this summer for me, in that order

That's going by stats. After seeing him play he is 100% an nhl goalie. Calmness of kallgren with the athleticism of Woll on a 6'6" frame. Why dubas has not signed him yet is beyond me. Woll and kallgren's ceiling is an nhl backup. Petruzzelli's floor is nhl backup. I think he takes the camp by storm this season. Much like Scott before injury.

I would love for that to that to happen. I agree his is their best goalie prospect next to Peska.

Mrazek would need to be included to make the money work. Robertson would not be include as we would need him in the lineup. We can't sell our entire future to swap mrazek for Gibson. Paying for Gibson then paying to swap Mrazek would do just that.
