Yet to hear good reason for NJD to break historical norms and trade 2nd pick

Created by: NHLfan10506

Description
A lot of teams have sent a myriad of offers for the 2nd overall pick. These are the most common arguments for us to move a pick that history tells us won't be moved.

It will take a truly special player to get that pick. It's just hard to envision any scenario where that happens.

---------------

“The Devils want to trade their pick”

(Our GM was asked one question before the lottery about trading his 1st rounder, to which he answer, "I am open to anything that helps our team". One out-of-town reporter covering for NHL.com, took it and ran a story saying Devils are looking to trade that pick. Nothing different has been said since. The likelihood that the pick is traded is quite low).

---------------

“We only want the 2nd overall pick”

(Scram! If you want a #2, you gotta earn it the old-fashion way and tank).

---------------

“These types of trades are uncommon because wingers as good as ours never get traded”

(In the cap era, a top-5 pick has never been traded for a player. Top wingers are traded every year).

---------------

“It starts at Holtz plus 2nd overall”

(Give me a break. When was the last time a top-5 pick AND a top-10 prospect were dealt in the same deal? If anyone answers this correctly, kudos to you).

---------------

“We get #2 pick since we plan on starting a bidding war for our guy”

(Yeah, right. If it is actually being made available, there will be more bids for the #2 pick than for your guy…so that may not work).

---------------

“If you add up the values of these fives pieces…”

(Haha, I was born at night, but not last night).

---------------

“The 2nd overall pick often busts so it doesn’t have much value”.

(Right, tell that to Malkin, Doughty, Hedman, Seguin, Landeskog, Barkov, Eichel, Laine, Svechnikov)

---------------

“But Nolan Patrick…”

(Historically, one is more likely to draft a Hall-of-Famer than a Nolan Patrick)

---------------

“1st round picks are traded all the time…here some examp…”

(Comparing a 20-something pick to a #2 overall pick is illogical...I'm not explaining why).
(Please ACGM, please, put a draft pick value chart up on this site).

---------------

“a 1st round pick has only X per cent chance of becoming a star according to...”

(Go ahead and believe some kid in his parents basement who build a 'model' that has never been peer-reviewed over years and years of available data that tell you otherwise)

---------------

“You are getting a guaranteed 40-goal scorer or point-per-game player"

(Only guarantees are death and taxes)

---------------

“It’s a bad draft year…so that pick doesn’t have much value”

(There are very few bad draft years when looking at the 2-best players from each…zero reason to think this year is like 2012)

---------------

"We are feeling pain giving up this much for your pick"

[eyeroll]

---------------

"We are paying this sum to move up X amount of spots, we'd ask for same amount if we were moving down X amount of spots"

(Ask any GM in hockey and none will say the cost to move up X spots or down X spots will be the same. For instance, the cost to jump from #16 to #6 will be greater than the cost to jump from #26 to #16. How is this not common knowledge at this point?).

---------------

"Its a good veteran for your young guys"

Unless Matt Tkachuk comes with an 8 year extension I wouldn’t do it. NJ needs a big power forwards over smaller skilled wingers like Debrincat or Fiala. Just stay and pick Slaf.

Ottawa is the one that need more skilled elite wingers

I would want to trade the 2nd pick for an elite forward like Kaapo Kakko
He showed up big for the Rangers in the playoffs, especially in that game 6 elimination game

Fair enough. If you think a roll of the dice is better than a proven and predictable asset, you should keep it. If that’s the case and you miss, you’ve wasted an opportunity to enhance your core. Again totally fine, but just because you don’t want to part with your 2nd overall doesn’t mean a guy isn’t worth it. Just a difference in philosophy.

Would you have dealt Brady for #2 overall last year (before he resigned)?

Before he re-signed I wanted Holtz and a 1st at the very least

I’d be fine with Wright, Cooley, Slavkovsky or Nemec over most the names I have seen thrown around for that pick.

What’s the cap hit on 8x for tkachuk? I still draft at 2 I think, possibly trade down and solve a hole maybe. Still have a elc from this lottery year and possibly fill a hole, over a straight trade.

Helly and 14 for daws and 2, being a jets fan, pretty much get shredded from both sides, but I like it lol. Even ducks could be interesting with Gibson and a lower pick.

I think Gibson or Hellebuyck (would be in on GM’s wishlist) in trade-down scenarios are more plausible than trading the pick outright for a scoring winger (not on our GM’s wishlist).

2 to 10 or 14, would be a conversation in itself or if they are even available. It’s amazing what a goalie can do for the rest of the team’s confidence, especially after watching eastern conference final. Tb never out of a game or series, and nyr just getting there. That young rangers blueline looks a whole lot better with shesterkin behind them.

Goaltending is highly unpredictable, especially while guys are young and cheap. But so valuable. It’s hard to understate how terrible our goalie situation was this year. We suited 8 guys, started 7 of them.

It was a typical game to see us come out flying, score a couple goals, only to give up a soft one, go flat, and then get rolled. Put a Gibson or Hellebuyck in net, we are probably at least hanging around playoff hunt.

Ya I liked to gamble against the devils ingame and overs, seemed like some of those goalies were under rapid fire to there defense, but ya a solid veteran that could eat 55 plus games would be huge to solidify defense and give the squad a fighting chance.

That’s your opinion and your entitled to it. Prospects are just that. Just because you wouldn’t give up the #2 and a top prospect doesn’t mean that isn’t the value. Someone will if Cat is traded. You don’t get 32 goals and 60 points for a 24 year old for a number 2 pick alone. You just don’t. Too much predictability for uncertainty. Some will pass and that’s ok, but that’s the exchange.

Sounds like a good bet to make. Especially when Gillies started. The guy would try to stare down rebounds. Literally, he’d stop a shot and freeze. The puck would just be laying on the ice in front of him and instead of simply picking it up, he would just stare at it. Have never seen anything like it since Mackey Sasser (the catcher who had yips so bad he couldn’t throw back to pitching mound).

The #2 pick is worth a lot more than you may think.

Wingers are always available and we have plenty of assets to acquire one. A 2nd overall pick has never been traded for a player in cap era.

Remember the sasser name but not much else. Blackwood is probably a backup, Daws i think there’s something there, but hopefully the early starts didn’t damage the confidence too bad. Crazier times with the cap era, and basically need to have every facet of the game hitting at the same time. Can’t wait for a goalie to catch up to the forwards development, or the blueline can’t get too old before the goalie comes around or you need to pay the forwards. Kind of need a perfect storm for some of the teams that don’t make the top of the list at ufa time.

Daws was thrown into the fire was certainly prone to some big confidence swings. He needs a full year in AHL next year.

The big unknown for NJD is if Bernier somehow comes back. I’m sure he will clear waivers. But we would want him eating starts in AHL. He had the first of that could be multiple hip surgeries, so maybe is done.

That’s the issue. Few will be willing to give up what it takes to acquire a #2 pick. I don’t blame them. Matthew Tkachuk probably isn’t available. Pastrnak and Debrincat would be intriguing, but neither can be extended until after draft. Fiala, Boeser, etc aren’t worth it.
