Description
Before TOR fans come after me, it was a TOR fan that proposed this. They actually had the pick as a 4th rounder, but I upped it to a 3rd rounder. I don’t know if this would get it done, but I would be willing to up the pick to a 2nd rounder and add a B level prospect like Thompson. I also wouldn’t mind trading Wood to TOR instead of Zacha

A middle 6 forward and a top 4 d is what I would want in a Nylander trade It might not be a bad idea to trade him this off-season because he likely jumps ship when his contract is over

/The reason Nylander might/should be trade is gain cap space to sign NHL goalie. Just don't know if the 3.8m difference between Severson and Nylander makes it viable. But if the Leafs could swing the cap, I think it's a deal the Leafs might do. Like the lineup you posted.

woahhh ,, in a situation where severson is dealt and they need a top 4 replacement there's much better options than overpaying for girard. sharangovich is very easily gonna be a 30 goal scorer next season and is 24, wouldn't even give him up 1for1

OP should probably have added retention on Severson and possibly taken Mrazeks cap back as well.
Feel like that’d be a more reasonable framework for a Nylander trade.

I think one thing we have all learned on this site is just because a Leafs fan made a trade doesn't mean it makes sense at all.

The Leafs don't have a gaping RHD hole like they have in the past. Trading Nylander for one season of Severson isn't going to make them a lot better. Zacha isn't really much help to the Leafs at all and a third round pick doesn't move the needle. I could see Toronto circling back to trading for Severson at the trade deadline if NJ is out of it. It wouldn't be for Nylander at that point, but some futures for sure. I don't see it happening in the offseason.

Trading Nylander is a dangerous idea for the Leafs. They need to create offence lower down in the lineup, and if they move him they either become a one-line team or break up the top line (which was a top-2 line in hockey last year). They need more depth scoring and play making from their wings (since outside of Matthews their centres lack that). Moving Nylander means they need to replace him, and there aren't a ton of Nylanders out there. He outplays his cap hit and has been getting better every season, no other fan base would be trying as hard to trade him as the Leafs do.

Top 4 dman for years to come on a team friendly deal. I’d say maybe lower the pick, but the players would have to have similar framework. Maybe we could substitute Smith in for Mukhamadulin but Sharangovich would have to be going back

If I’m including Blackwood, it’d just be Blackwood and Severson. Even tho Blackwood has struggled, young goalies are scarce rn. Severson and Blackwood would be highest I pay for Nylander

I know my Leafs friends will object but Nylander and Mrzarek for Severson and a 2nd rounder would be fair to me.
Leafs get Severson for a year and 6.5m in cap space. Next season the Leafs have more cap, though they would have fill Severson's spot as he probably leaves as a UFA. Jersey keeps Nylander and if they feel they can't resign by 2024, have him as TDL trade material, unless Jersey is in the playoff hunt, then they keep him.

Think Nylander would sign in NJ. He’d see the potential on the team just as he’s entering his prime

Oh I agree, NJD has good chance signing good UFAs. Cap room and seemingly a young team with upside.

It would be a bad trade then. Blackwood has one good season and is coming off major injury. Maybe he's good and can be a decent starter, or maybe he can't. And if he has a bad year, you might have to still resign him on his qualifying. I actually like Severson and wanted him on the leafs at TDL, but you don't trade a fwd signed for 2 yrs coming off a 80 point year for a top4 dman in his UFA yr. Boston traded a 1st, 2 2nds and a low prospect that maybe tops out as a 6th dman for a signed Lindholm- who is the better player.

Should point out that I think any Severson + cap relief for Nylander trade should be contingent on Sevs not being interested in resigning with the Devils.
Devils get a good asset for one more year, Leaf’s get a #2-3 RHD sufficient cap to retool their top six.
