Trading Girard for a struggling forward, overpaying Chiarot and Campbell, and signing Evander Kane?

Good job at achieving what you were going for!

I think the number of Habs fans that would actually be in favour of that trade wouldn't be that high. Especially after the season Girard had.

Uhhh what? Girard was great this season? He would easily be a top pair guy in Montreal.

Am I wrong? He didn't look much like what he looked like last year. He had 17 primary points and a negative xGF%. Like, we're looking at a bad offseason for Colorado, but Chiarot still had a better 5v5 relative on ice stats and produced at a similar rate.

IDK, can you present some evidence showing he had a great season?

Which is great, but Montreal's rebuilding. And they're probably going to be able to get a better futures return for a big winger who can skate and has good hands (that teams constantly call on) than an undersized offensive D-man that has had noticeable struggles in the playoffs.

he was pair with jack johnson for a while and kuemper blew at the start of the season. explains some of the advanced stats.

girard been both hot and cold in the playoffs. more about consistency and size than skill. he'd be montreals best defensemen.

Agreed here. Also using 5v5 relative stats comparing Chiarot on one of the worst possession teams to Girard on one of the best teams is pretty misleading/not particularly useful.

Don’t get me wrong: Girard is not perfect. He is a smaller defenseman, he can get hemmed in his own zone by a strong cycle, and his flashy spins don’t always translate to points. But he’s an excellent transition player, a strong puck mover, and excels at puck retrievals and breakouts.

Goaltending has almost no effect on advanced stats and the fact Girard looking bad with D like the Johnsons and good with elite D Makar or near elite D like Toews is a pretty persuasive argument for why he'd be a bad acquisition for a team like Montreal.

And Girard is not better than Petry.

Its a moot point anyways, Montreal isn't looking to be good now, they'll be looking to be good in the future. Girard doesn't make any sense for them right now.

that argument makes no sense. jack johnson is one of the worst defensive d in the league. of course a player is going to look worse playing next to him. makar is the best d in the league, of course a player is going to look better next to him.

yea he's better than petry and only going to widen the gap as girard gets closer to his prime and petry keeps getting farther from his.

i dont think it's moot. hughes has made it clear he's looking for a rebuild and not a retool. allegedy he's looking to make moves to improve the d. i think g will be one of his top targets if sakic makes g available.

I'm talking about Erik Johnson and Devon Toews too. And if Montreal's D is so bad, it's clear Girard can't improve it himself.

And he's definitely not better than Petry. He's not as good 5v5, can't play the kind of minutes Petry plays and isn't even as good offensively at ES.

And Hughes has been pretty clear as to what he's looking for on D and Girard doesn't fit the bill.

again that makes no sense. every player gets worse going from a good partner to a bad partner. if that's your requirement montreal is going to be stuck with the same d and never improve.

yes he's better than petry. smaller and a worse shot but better at everything else and trending in the right direction. not regressing like petry.

its clear montreals biggest d weakness is their transition. they can't get the puck to their forwards.

I think Romy will for now, and Guhle will be in 3-5 years. Girard doesn't have a long term effect for MTL, and not even that great of a current effect either

girard is way better than romanov, it's not even close. guhle has a fair shot. girard is 24 and signed for 4 years. he's very long term. he's a solid #3 and would be the best dman on the habs.

Unless they, you know, rebuild. Which is what they're doing. Its just not a move that makes sense. If Montreal trades Anderson, it will be for what they've reportedly asked from teams that wont stop calling about his availability.

And Petry is really impressive in that he can somehow regress this season and still take a massive jump forward in the 2nd half. You'd know that if you watched him play at all (or bothered looking up his stats). Playing with worse partners. Which doesn't matter according to you unless it serves your argument I guess.

You can keep repeating over and over how good Girard is, but other people watched him this season too and unless you're actually going to support your argument then I'm not sure how you're going to convince anyone of anything.

Sure. Since Ducharme (who Petry was very critical of) was fired and MSL came on (February 8, 2022), among D-men Petry was:

-25th in points
-10th in 5v5 points
-Had one of top 5v5 P/60.
-Outscored and outchanced opponents playing defensive zone skewed minutes and a greater than average push against other teams top players.

He had a very strong second half that was more than just in line with what he's done since 2017 (with the exception of the first half of the season).

You got any support to any of your arguments?

can't ignore half a season lol. petry got better but nothing to suggest it wasnt just a hot steak. defensively he took a dive from previous seasons.

No, you're right. A 38 game window over 5 years is clearly the better predictor. He was more than fine defensively in the 2nd half too.

I still see you're not actually supporting any of your arguments though.

His defensive game was more than fine the 2nd half, Montreal was outchancing and outscoring the other teams best players with him defending. And I'm not ignoring half a season, I think a sample of 321 games is more meaningful than 37 games, especially with the clear extenuating circumstances.

I get that you're trying to shift the argument to Petry since you don't actually have a supportable argument to make, but at least come back with more than just an uninformed opinion.
