Initial Creation Date: Jun. 24, 2022
Published: Jun. 27, 2022

Description
Missing from lineup: 1st round pick (2023), hopefully high since most significant trades/signings occur after the 2023 draft, especially in the summer 2024.

Still missing: Impactful RD

Goalie situation: Assumes Price is on LTIR and that Allen is kept around and signed mid-term to mentor Primeau/Montembault.

Trades
1.
MTL
  1. 2024 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Detroit gets an affordable veteran scoring winger, a cheap reliable LD and a (high) 3rd round pick this year to take on Hoffman’s contract without retention for the next 2 years.
DET
  1. Hoffman, Mike
  2. Schueneman, Corey
  3. 2022 3rd round pick (MTL)
  4. 2023 5th round pick (MTL)
2.
MTL
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (WSH)
WSH
  1. Dadonov, Evgeni
Additional Details:
Hopefully, Dadonov @ 50% salary retention suits the need of a contender and can be traded for a top-64 pick at the 2023 TDL.
3.
MTL
  1. 2023 2nd round pick (PIT)
PIT
  1. Drouin, Jonathan
Additional Details:
Hopefully, Drouin @ 50% salary retention will fill the need of a contender and fetch a top-64 pick at the 2023 TDL.
4.
MTL
  1. 2022 1st round pick (DAL)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Dalla gets a veteran RD to bolster his D corps, provided Klingberg walks as a UFA this offseason.
DAL
  1. Petry, Jeff
  2. 2024 4th round pick (DAL)
5.
MTL
  1. Girard, Samuel
Additional Details:
With Byram ready to step up in the Avalanche’s top-4 and a few strategic forwards to re-sign this offseason, maybe Girard can be made expandable? If so, the Habs should target him and offer at most DAL’s 1st (19th overall) in 2022; MTL’s 2nd in 2023 and a D prospect not named Guhle (Harris/Mailloux/Struble, etc.)
COL
  1. Harris, Jordan
  2. 2022 1st round pick (DAL)
  3. 2023 2nd round pick (MTL)
6.
MTL
  1. Lafrenière, Alexis [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
With Panarin and Kreider set on the Rangers’ top-6 LW positions, maybe Lafrenière can be made avalaible to bolster other positions in need next offseaon? If so, would Dvorak (cost-controlled middle-6 C), promising LW prospect Sean Farrell and FLA’s 1st in 2023 be enough to move the needle?
NYR
  1. Dvorak, Christian
  2. Farrell, Sean
  3. 2023 1st round pick (FLA)
7.
MTL
  1. Dubois, Pierre-Luc [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
If the rumours are indeed true and Dubois intends to sign with his childhood team when he hits UFA-status in 2024, the Habs should welcome him with open arms if the latter is willing to sign a contract resembling Suzuki’s terms.
WPG
8.
MTL
  1. 2023 4th round pick (VAN)
VAN
  1. 2022 4th round pick (NYR)
9.
MTL
  1. Roy, Nicolas [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
If Vegas and Roy cannot find common ground long-term, the Habs should target him. Seeing as an offer sheet compensation within his price range should be a 3rd or 2nd at most, would a less confrontational approach of using a LD prospect, Poehling and a mid-round pick as a package in the 2023 offseason seems fair?
VGK
  1. Poehling, Ryan
  2. Struble, Jayden
  3. 2023 4th round pick (MTL)

Hoffman is human garbage. Yzerman values character way too much to ever add locker room poison like him. Hard pass.

1st and a 2nd for Petry? Yeah, no thanks from Dallas. Tyson Barrie is slightly worse, but significantly cheaper in both cap hit & trade value. Dallas will go trade for him instead.

These Petry trades are just getting worse and worse. At least he didn’t go to Detroit in this one.

How unreasonable can be a "late teen" 1st round pick and a swap of a 2nd vs a 4th in 2024 in return for a consistent 40+ pts/ season RHD who can play top-4 signed @ 6.25M? The Habs have no incentive whatsoever to part with Petry this summer unless a 2022 1st round pick involved. If not, the Habs likely stick with Petry to mentor the young D corps until the 2025 TDL and likely get a 1st+ for him then anyways.

If the Habs have no incentive to trade Petry, then why is he a part of EVERY Habs ACGM? And yeah, most teams wouldn’t trade a 1st for an old, overpaid d-man in a salary cap world. MAYBE a contending team who has cap space and a hole at RD but even then, I doubt they trade a 1st.

Barrie is much worst than Petry; and the difference between them appears to me much wider than their 1.75M AAV salary gap. But if Dallas deems that a 4.5M AAV RHD who can't play defense is a more adequate short-term replacement for Klingberg, that's fair.

My humble guess is that he's included in several proposals for mainly two reasons: 1) persistent rumours that he wants to play South of the border ; 2) along with Anderson, he's basically the only "touchable" impactful player signed with term who has a legitimate trade value.

This being said, like Anderson, there's no rush to trade Petry. The rebuilding Habs have the luxury of having a three year window to sell Petry to the highest bidder since he won't be part of the next "core" considering his age. In other words, the Habs either get a 1st+ right now, or trade him in 2025 for potentially a similar package.
