Prioritizing Naz over Kuemps

Created by: NMAvsFan
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 1, 2022
Published: Jul. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Avs proved they could win without outstanding goalie play so they do what they have to in order to keep Naz and Nuke, who both take a little less to stay with a winner. They then fill in around the big pieces with guys who want to win with Francouz and MAF playing as a tandem which seems like a plausible scenario given that Sakic hates paying goalies. Things get a little interesting the following year with Mac, Byram and Newhook (and possibly Meyers) to re-sign but they can manage it.

I can see the argument you’re making but do you really think Naz deserves more money than Landy?

Landeskog doesn’t really set a good standard to form ideas around contract value. He signed a MAJOR team friendly deal in COL. If you look around the league, players that produced like Kadri are making more AAV, I mean look at Fiala for example. Kadri put up 87 points last year and helped a lot during the playoffs, he’ll make well over $7M, I think $7.5M on a short term deal is almost too cheap for him

I think Colorado would be insane to sign kuemper over Kadri.

Whilst I appreciate what Kadri contributed let's not forget his points total this year was bloated by 1PPG time plus time on the first line when various first line forwards were out injured. Hard to say he'll consistently run at that level especially at his age. Priority over Kuemper? Maybe. Overpay to keep him? Nope.

Love Naz, but you’re talking about a guy that had a career year that had 60pts only one other time in his career is 31 and you have a built in replacement in Newhook. Kuemper went 47-16 with 6 shutouts, for a little comparison Vasilevsky went 53-27 with 3 shutouts. I’m not saying he’s as good as Vasilevsky but that’s pretty damn good and when they had to have him Kuemper delivered especially in game 6.

Shorter term - I definitely would not want him for more than 5 years and that is even stretching it

I'm not sure Newhook is ready to take over at 2C and I doubt Bednar would put him in that position. If they don't re-sign Naz and don't pick up anyone in FA, chances are good that JTC is 2C next year and that isn't ideal, either. I agree it's unlikely Kadri repeats his performance from this year but if he can provide 70-80 points while also playing good D for the next 3-5 years, it's probably worth it.

They have to make some hard choices, and what you’re asking is that Kadri repeat a career year for 3 consecutive years into his mid 30’s is that really feasible, or is more reasonable to expect Newhook to turn into a 50-60 pt player getting to play with wingers like Landeskog and Lehkonen?

It would definitely be a risk to re-sign him, especially for term. I can see Joe deciding that he isn't going to spend money on Naz or Kuemps and going bargain hunting again so he can prioritize Nuke, Lehky and the guys that need new deals the following year.

Naz, Kuemper, Nuke, Lehkonen can all stay at right about what they're worth if you move Compher and replace him with Kaut or Aube Kubel.
