There's one year left on JVRs deal, they're getting a 1st for taking him, they're not in a cap crunch, and it's a freaking 4th. If Chuck asks for a 4th in return I doubt that'll be the deal breaker for Stevie Y. Regardless, it doesn't matter if its a 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th, but I think will want some small compensation.

Maybe if he was a center but as a winger he takes a roster spot from a prospect and since Detroit isn't a playoff team and JVR isn't going to change that. So 1 year of JVR doesn't really benefit Detroit at all making him a cap dump from Detroit's POV.

Wings accept and either waive, or trade JVR with 50% retention for a late pick

You can't sign Gaudreau to 8 years without trading for his rights before free agency, and he wouldn't sign to a team in the midst of a rebuild that doesn't realize its rebuilding.

Yes, it is definitely a cap dump. It was never meant to be a good pick up, thats why the wings are getting the draft compensation for taking him. I think u missed the point of the trade a little and the wings are not a team that likes to rush their prospects into the NHL. Even if they did, they would definitely prioritize the prospects minutes over JVRs. Stevie Y said he likes weaponize his cap as well, so this definitely makes sense for the wings.

No Yzerman never said that and it's actually one thing some Wing's fans feel he should do more of. The couple of cap dumps Yzerman you can argue that they weren't really cap dumps at all. Take a look at the amount cap space Detroit has had since Yzerman became GM. Plus once you get up to $6M cap hit range a 1st is fair compensation.

Term matters much more than money when it comes to draft compensation. An example would be, since you've clearly forgotten, the Wings taking on Marc Staals 5.7mil/1yr contract for a 2nd. If that takes a second then an extra 2mil shouldn't cost an entire 1st. JVR is also only getting paid 4mil this next season and Staal only got paid 3.2 for that season.

With the Staal trade Detroit was in desperate need of a LHD or 2 when that trade was made. Staal filled a hole and since Detroit doesn't has no need for JVR so the price goes up.

I'm sorry but I don't think you understand how cap dumps work. Teams don't take on bad contracts to fill holes. There's a reason they are being dumped and are referred to as bad contracts. The players don't fill holes because they are holes in themselves, hence why they are being dumped with draft compensation.
