What Are We Doing Now Tommy

Created by: DevilsFanZack13

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know its only Day 1 of Free Agency, but missing out on Johnny Gaudreau, what are we doing now? We can't just sign Brendan Smith as our only free agent signing. Is there a trade in place? Let me know what you guys think because once we sign all our RFAs, I'm still not convinced we are better.

We missed out on adding players by going after Gaudreau. Never should have pursued him if we did. Major blunder.

Tkachuk might become available. He's more of what NJ needs anyway

I mean I know they didn’t accept the trade for the 2nd pick so hard to see what they would accept now. Calgary is entering a weird period now

Gotta think CGY will throw everything they have to try to keep Tkachuk. But if he's set on not signing there long term then a trade might be possible.

Kadri?

Doubt it. Our 4 centers are:

Hughes
Hischier
Haula/Mercer/Boqvist
McLeod

What does it cost us though? I feel if we traded for Tkachuk, it will gut our team.

If too much, move on.
We have a good group.

Acquire or develop a couple of 'bigs' for heavier play in corners and around net.
Acquire or develop a solid goalie.
...and we are there.

I'm not sure what everyone expects for this team. JG was not going to solve their most pressing issues & in almost all cases is just another (better, older) version of what they already have (eg see: Bratt, Jesper ... Hughes, Jack ... Mercer, D).

Would he have improved their defense?
Need for net front scoring?
Toughness / size?
... and the big one ... goaltending?

NJ can score ... another electric winger, OK, sure ... but they missed, long term, maybe a blessing.

Was he really what they need? Now? Next year? In 5 years?

Who else would you have preferred (at the price paid)? If they had a do over?

They absolutely have to trade Tkachuk if he's not going to sign long-term. You can't lose two 100pt players for nothing in consecutive seasons.

Last week and up until 24 hours ago they believed they were keeping Gaudreau. Hindsight, the Flames should have done that deal, but at the time they believed Johnny would stay. Trading Tkachuk would have squashed that.

I've got no idea what to expect from the Flames. UFA is already picked-over. I'm sure they're interested in Kadri. Maybe they look at Palat

Hard to replace the 2nd leading point scorer in the league. The most viable option I would say was max pacioretty but it would have costed more than future considerations for the flames to get him because same division. No real super great LW on the market so best option would be to trade. My question is who tho. Hitting up montreal for a guy like drouin would he questionable but if he can revitalize his career he will be good. D Strome is a C but can play LW and he is probably the best young guy on the market as a bandaid for their current situation. But as Taylor swift said “bandaids don’t fix bullet holes” and the loss of Johnny hockey for nothing is the equivalent to being shot with an elephant gun

I think they are trying to sign Kadri. We'll see though.

Gaudreau can't be replaced though. The only way you can typically get a dynamic, play-driving winger is at the top of the draft.

Just the presence of Markstrom on the team will prevent that
