There you have it. Not that I agree with everything Tony says... but he had the Jets reporter from the Athletic with probably the best idea of what the Jets are doing.

RIGHT NOW, It'll cost Suzuki to get Dubois. Cheveldayoff feels no pressure to move Dubois now unless he gets a direct replacement for him. Barring that he will wait it out like he's done with every other player whose asked to be traded out of WIN...

All the rumors of the Habs offering 3 players + at the draft for Dubois are probably true...but the fact that PLD is still a Jet is because Cheveldayoff turned down the deal.

So Habs fans are going to have to wait it out for the next 2 years for PLD.....and if you ask me.....it's probably for the best....

but never say never!!!

As an outsider, I think it's a relatively fair deal

yeah if he wants to come then we'll wait and pick him for free. Why give good assets when you can just wait, anyway we aint going nowhere for 2 years. easy pass on dubois.

Life isn't fair!

Anyone expecting a PLD trade to be fair with everything out there, may as well also believe in Santa Clause.

You're not getting Suzuki in a "fair" deal. If PLD is traded it wont be fair.

If Chevy is smart, he cuts his losses and starts the rebuild.

In a vacuum, sure. I'd say both players are pretty even. I could be biased because I think Suzuki has a very slight edge just for being 2 years younger.

But taking everything into consideration, it makes no sense for the Habs. MTL won't be competing next year, are most likely a lottery team, and can simply wait 2 years, get a solid draft pick in 2023 (Bedard?!), keep Suzuki, then just sign PLD as a UFA in 2024 when MTL will be looking to start to be competitive.

On the other hand, it makes sense for the Jets to ask for Suzuki. They really aren't in a rush to move PLD, and historically, haven't moved players who've wanted out until the very last second.

Only thing that could change everything is if PLD pulls the same crap he did in CBJ... self sabotaging himself and the team...

Only chance to get PLD sooner is if he starts the same poop he did in CBJ before being traded.... not ideal, but I don't see why Cheveldayoff would be in any hurry.

This is most likely outcome If Montreal wants him, they will have to wait 2 years, hope he still wants to go to Montreal, hope Montreal has the cap space and need for him, hope they can outbid all the other teams that will be after a young 1C and offer him the typical bad FA contract that is regrettable the minute it is signed.

Montreal gets their player and screws their cap at the same time. Win-win.

To add more fuel to the fire (or basically just validating the rumours)

The Athletic just released an article discussing this very subject.

Ah cool section from the article:

“If Brisson can make Dubois’ desires so public that other teams become less interested in him, then Montreal’s offer — as inadequate as it may seem now — may end up standing above the competition. Winnipeg owes itself the best trade return possible so it is in Dubois’ best interest to create circumstances where the Canadiens’ offer is the best one out there.

There is also the matter of Dubois asking to be traded just two years after the last time he asked to be moved. There are teams that will be turned off by his requests, writing him off as a player who is simply trying to force his way to Montreal.”

I'll piggyback off that last quote with another quote from the article.

"The Canadiens have leverage here. Dubois will only be 26 when he’s eligible for unrestricted free agency. Presumably, Montreal could wait two seasons and watch Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield and Slafkovsky develop. They could wait and see on Dach — perhaps he can become the player Chicago hoped it was getting when they drafted him No. 3 in 2019. And then, in 2024, Montreal could sign Dubois to a seven-year contract without giving up any assets for him."

That right there is the leverage. It's pretty clear and concise. This wont be a fair trade but ppl do act like the Jets need to get value for PLD, they are at the same time dismissing every single detail of the lead-up to the trade request.

This is why they need to cut their losses with Petry in the same way Chevy needs to cut his losses with PLD. Take a 2nd rounder for Petry. It shouldn't be too hard. Burns got picks as well. Petry is better overall player over Burns who's more of a rover than defenseman. Top4 RHD should be able to get more than a 2nd but the cost certainty and the room for the young players to grow should be paramount while stocking the cupboards.

Also neat tidbit…Dubois showed up to the draft in MTL expecting to be traded.
