If the Habs were to trade for Dubois

Created by: JeffGorton
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 18, 2022
Published: Jul. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Im gonna base this trade on the one the Habs made with Vegas for Pacioretty. Patches was a former 35 goal scorer who asked for a trade. Habs made on and acquire Nick Suzuki (top 6 prospect at the time), a 2nd round pick and Tomas Tatar who was a 4.8 x 3 year cap dump. Habs also retained 400k while Veags did the same.

Dubois publicly asked for a trade, is not a consistent 30 goal scorer and will upwards of 7m aav. Although he is younger and in a position of value (Center), hes worth less than Patches trade value. The public outbursts and the overall bad attitude of Dubois makes the positives for him moot.

Here are 2 potential trades

Are you saying Dubois now is better than Pacioretty when he was on the Habs?

Pacioretty
2016-2018 had 145GP 52G 52A 104P
or 29.4G/82 29.4A/82 58.8P/82

Dubois
2020-2022 had 122GP 36G 44A 80P
or 24.2G/82 29.5A/82 53.7P/82

Pacioretty was resigned immediately after traded and had a track record of being a stand up teammate, was a captain, and consistent 30-35 goal scorer. Dubois is ditching his 2nd team in 3 years and takes 100+PIMS in a season (lazy defensively)

Good golly, how can you be on cap friendly, with all the contract information right at your fingertips and still have absolutely no clue on how RFA/UFA status and age affects player values. Some Montreal fans. Lol Yikes.

Dubois is an rfa who hasnt gone to arbitration which means he wants more than a 1 year deal. But he wants to leave the Jets for the Habs and hes a UFA in 2 years. So a 2 year deal would get it done. Probably a no trade clause in there as well and boom Jets less than nothing, they get embarrassed when the Habs sign Dubois for free in 2024

Yeah, if you can outbid whatever team Dubois is playing for in two years that will be great. I think everyone would love to see Montreal add another overpaid contract to their extensive collection.

But the real point of my post was about your lack of basic knowledge on contracts.

Dubois is younger than max now and 4 years ago. (2018 trade)Nick Suzuki at the time has 0 nhl games, Tatar was pretty good. 2019 pick 50 which was then traded again and turned into norlinder. Who still hasn’t don much in the league other than be regarded as a top Montreal prospect. Dubois with a 2022 third was traded for laine and roslovic which is over worth more than the first patioretty trade at that time. Winnipeg also look like they would be targeting one of Caufield or Suzuki in the package of players they want. No way this is comparable to that.

Youre skewing the truth.

Tatar was a cap dump, end of story

That 2nd round pick is just a 2nd round pick. Juts because the Habs did 'well' with it doesnt mean its value goes up

There is only a 5 year difference between Pacioretty when he was traded and Dubois now. Its not like Dubois is still 21, hes 24. Pacioretty was also a much better all around better and a much better scorer with less help. (Dude had Deharnais and Weise as his linemates)

Dubois's value 2 years ago is irrelevant now because 1. he hasnt improved 2. hes asked for another trade 3. hes 2 years away from being a UFA

Suzuki or Caufield are worth more than Dubois on their own.

I need to know how Tatar was a cap dump when in Montreal he had a 58 then 61 then 30 point campaigns and played on the first line 2/3 are quite good season’s. If you want to look at the current what you said about Dubois is true. Don’t forget Max was traded for nothing last week with coghlan if we are talking about the now. A top prospect that was a good pick is better than drafting a worthless bust. Here is Montreal’s most common lines in in separate links. Those were not his main line mates before he left. Only David was mentioned in the lines with him is 2014-15

Yes Tatar was very good for the Habs. Thats called hindsight. But when the trade was made he was on Vegas and they needed to shed salary. The Habs didnt want Tatar but had to take him to make the trade work.

All of your rebuttals are hindsight. That 2nd round pick was just a 2nd round pick at the time. It wasnt Norlinder and it wasnt a worthless bust.

Max's value last week has nothing to do with his value 3 years ago. Vegas needed to shed salary again and Pacioretty has been injury prone since the trade. Again hindsight.

Now the line combos.

Pacioretty had 1 year of 2 decent linemates (still not 1st liners) in Danault and Radulov. The rest are with Plekanec and Gallagher or with Galchenyuk, Shaw and Parenteau

Dubois had Kyle Connor next to him
