Was this a good signing?

This is the best outcome for everyone but the Habs.(outside of him signing for 8 years of course)

The Jets either keep him for this year and trade him next off season(its not like we can get more for him now compared to next June 25) to MTL

or the Jets trade him to a contender for some considerable value as he is cheap and still has a year left after this one.

Teams should pay a lot for him retained at the tdl. Or even mid season.

Don't need to retain. But if you do retain a team like Vegas, Tampa, or Toronto may pay through the nose.

What’s with these short-term PLD contracts. Seems teams are very skittish about having this guy for long term.

He accepted his QO. The team has no say in this contract.

Well, PLD has blown every ounce of leverage he has by making it clear that, more or less, MTL is the only place he’ll sign long-term. Other teams don’t want to bother with giving up the value for 1-2 years of him.

It’s pretty clear MTL can’t/ won’t give up what it takes to get him now, so they’re kicking the can a year down the road, hoping the ask goes down.

Otherwise, they’ll just wait him out until UFA. When you have Suzuki and Dach down the middle, and you’re rebuilding with low expectations, you can afford to wait. Frankly, if Dach hits even some of his potential, they’d have no need for PLD.

Right. He's French and wants to play for the Frenchest team in the league.

I like this contract for the Jets. If by some miracle he changes his mind and wants to stay in Winnipeg, he will still be an RFA next offseason and they can get it done. If he wants out, they can trade him instead of getting nothing in return in 2024.

I voted yes but I would’ve liked it more at $5,500,000
