Here is my proposal of a potential Miller to Carolina deal at the trade deadline.

It's no secret that JT Miller's tenure with the Canucks might be coming to a close soon, assuming Vancouver is not a cup contender at the deadline they may look to move Miller

Why this deal works for Vancouver:

The trade deadline would mark the last chance of getting a return for JT Miller before potentially losing him to free agency for nothing.

This deal would allow Vancouver to a get a 1st round pick which is normal for contending teams to give up for a rental.
They would also snag a promising young center in Ryan Suzuki and two guys who can play on their roster this season in Coghlan and Martinook, considering Vancouver's somewhat lack of leverage in a deal knowing they could potentially lose Miller for nothing I think you take this return unless another team bids more.

Why this deal works for Carolina:

Carolina is a cup contender but they might need one more splash to get them over the hump, adding JT Miller would give them one of the best top 6's in hockey although he would be a rental it may be worth to take a shot.

The Canes would have to give up a 1st round pick, but considering Carolina is gunning for a cup and will be one of the best teams in the league that pick will be at best in the late 20s. Ryan Suzuki is a promising prospect but when you consider Carolina's center depth (Aho, KK, Staal, Necas and Drury) this does lead Suzuki as an odd one out and Vancouver could use a promising young center.

As for Coghlan while a young defenseman, the Canes do already have a young 3rd pairing right handed defenseman in Jalen Chatfield so Coghlan can be traded without really any risk, as for Martinook he is perfectly replaceable for Carolina as they can call up a player from Chicago to replace Martinook on the 4th line, (most likely Stefan Noesen)

The reason Vancouver is retaining some cap is because assuming the Canes do not move Gardiner this would leave Carolina with not much cap. Ideally the Canes dump Gardiners salary this off season so they could swallow Miller's entire contract making it much more likely for a deal to get done while still having a little bit of cap but that doesn't look to be the case, so there would need to be some retention, if there is no cap retention than Vancouver can't get a return on Miller and Carolina can't get their big deadline acquisition. Vancouver could have 1.7M in dead cap but that's not bad for only half a year.

One problem I could see with this deal is Vancouver still might want to compete for a playoff spot after the deadline meaning they would probably ask for a Centre who could help them win now instead of a prospect, most notably Martin Necas, I do not see the Canes willing to move on from Necas for a rental. This is why I do not see this deal being made but it's fun to speculate.

What do y'all think? Is Carolina overpaying for a rental? Is the package not enough for Vancouver? Is it too risky for Carolina?

Understandable, out of curiosity, do you think the Canucks could get a better package at the deadline or do you think the front office can re-sign him because it would be very risky to let him hit free agency.

Sudbury is still mad his Leafs are irrelevant. Canes would have to look like no doubt Cup winners to trade their first. We would be more likely to trade our first for Garland before Miller though. We arent big rental market types.

Yeah rentals can be risky, so I understand why Carolina doesn't do them, however with the Canes still having their 2024 and 2025 first round picks and being one of the best drafting and developing organizations over the past few years especially past the 1st round sacrificing a little of the future for a " win now" could be a risk that's worth to take.

Swap Coghlan with Bear and drop the pick to a second and a third and you at least get the Canes attention for Miller.

The Canes just don’t give ip first round picks for rentals. Not only that but they generally don’t trade their first rounders. I mean, the last 4 instances off the top of my head where the Canes traded their first rounder, 1) when they traded for J. Staal, 2) when they traded for Skjei, and 3) they traded down at the 2021 draft with Nashville, and 4) the offer sheet to KK that included a first as compensation.

The Canes only trade 1st rounder for players that they plan on having stick around for the long run. Miller wouldn’t be sticking around for the long run. And as for the biggest piece the Canes have given up for a rental, that would be a 2nd round pick in 2005-06 season for Mark Recchi.

I at least appreciate the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of this Miller to CAR scenario. Still don’t think it’s likely but it makes a lot more sense than most of these offers have. Canes don’t normally trade their firsts for rentals and probably still won’t but this is more likely than what I’ve seen in the past.

It would be great to not have to give up a 1st for Miller but I feel like we might if a deal had to get done especially with Vancouver retaining salary.

I think we need to start being more aggressive at the trade deadline, the past two years all we have done is trade for Jani Hakanpaa and Max Domi and I feel like it's costed us, while I like what those players brought and no denying that Domi saved our ass in game 7 vs the Bruins but they weren't legit contributors to our runs, we need to grab a guy who can take us over the top instead of trading for 4th liners and 3rd pairing defenseman. Not saying it specifically has to be Miller and if we can find a way to not cough up a 1st that would be great, but I think Waddell needs to start being more aggressive at the deadline. That's just my opinion though.

its hard to see us trading miller at the deadline, if we were insistent on trading we'd probably make a trade now. if we keep miller canucks will likely be in a playoff spot, really hard to see us selling then - especially as we could've made that choice at the deadline this season for an even better package and chose not to. at that point we would probably just keep him for a playoff run and then try to convince him to re-sign
