Major Rebuild

Created by: Grapevine
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 27, 2022
Published: Jul. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I’m aware Chevy thinks this team is playoff calibre but I don’t agree. I think we will be closer to Chicago in the standings than we will be to Colorado.

After all of this we would have 7 1st rounders over 3 drafts, as well as 5 2nd and 4 3rds

Severson signs a long term deal to stay home in Manit

Stankoven is one of the top 20-25 prospects in the NHL. Dufour is the Memorial Cup MVP and one of the most underrated prospects in the league.

The offer sheet on Dobson is quite the long shoot but a player of his talent might be worth the gamble

Holy crap these trades are bad for Winnipeg, especially the devils and blues ones. Except the Dallas one don’t think Dallas does that

I think this team does better in the standings than you think it will. Also, a "major rebuild" is trading away value for a bunch of high drafting picks. You seem to be getting 18-28 overall picks, which could be grade A prospects, but not as likely. If this were a "major rebuild" you should trade Ehlers, and not trade for Severson, who is young, but he is pretty good.

Overall, your blueline is pretty good minus Schmidt. In this you seem to be doing some rebuilding for some very good prospects, but I think they make a difference for the team to be good enough not to get a top 5-10 pick, even with Blackwood as your G.

If I'm the GM, I would prefer a re-tool, trading away Schiefle, Wheeler (locker room cancer guys per rumors), Dubois if he really wants to go, and Schmidt because I don't think he's good enough on a contender. WIth those trades, you can get some young and undervalued players. Hellebuyck is very good and will get you far in the playoffs, granted you have guys that can play in front of him. Also, there are still some UFAs that can be signed to help with depth. ie Sonny Milano.

As a Dallas fan, I would hope they dont do that either. In 3 years, Suter, Benn, Faksa, Lindell are all off the books. By that time their big 3 forward prospects (Bourque, Stankoven, Johnston) should be getting into the lineup for them. Hopefully by then they draft a RHD that can play with Miro.

How is getting two firsts rounders out of a player we will lose for free a bad deal?
.
Dawson Mercer is going to be a star in this league. Severson is a very good RHD who probably has 6-7 good years left in him. Blackwood absolutely can still be a starter in this league. He’s only 25.

None of this makes sense. It's definitely not a rebuild if you're keeping guys like Ehlers and Morrissey around and trading for Severson and offersheeting picks away. It looks more like a retool, but you traded Kyle Connor... I have no idea what your goal is here

I mean at least a get a 2023 1st. Mercer is a great young player but the rest is meh. Blackwood is still young but I think his ceiling is lower end starter. Those 1sts will be late and you’re giving A former Vezina goaltender and one of the best scorers in the league with 4 years of term.

We would be banking on those picks being 18-25 range from NJ. I think they would be a cup contender by 2025

If you are planning a rebuild, I think you need to start with identifying Elite talent you plan to build around. Are Perfetti, Mercer, & Blackwood the Elite elements of that core? Because if not, you may be able to secure one of those pieces by trading those pieces many for 1 or for higher end draft picks and try and land one of the 2023 big 3 draft picks.

This team would be built around Perfetti, Mercer, Dobson, Morrissey and whoever emerges from all those picks, not to mention we would have Chaz Lucius, our two firsts from this draft.

Tough to begin a rebuild around a 27 + 22 year old star defencemen. I think you're gonna have to be bottom 5 in the league 3 years in a row to rebuild and it does not seem like the team you are icing is gonna do that. If you are going for the accelerated rebuild - not many teams have pulled it off and it pisses the fans off because the team is bad and then they have to be bad all over again.

Our current team is mediocre and only going to be worse as the teams above us in our division all tried to improve their teams while we did next to nothing

I agree with the rebuild, I just think it's a mistake to sign Dobson and retain Morrissey. You have to be truly terrible for a few years and this team isn't bad enough.

This seems a little aggressive for me

But if Winnipeg goes for rebuild, I'd hope NJD would be first in line for Hellebuyck.

Long-term depth BEFORE trade:

Sharangovich -- Hughes -- Mercer
Holtz -- Hischier -- Bratt
Gritsyuk -- Boqvist -- Thompson
Foote -- Salminen -- Zetterlund

Siegenthaler -- Hamilton
Hughes -- Nemec
Okhotiuk/Bahl -- Mukhamadullin

Blackwood
Daws

Long-term depth AFTER trade:

Connor -- Hughes -- Holtz
Sharangovich -- Hischier -- Bratt
Gritsyuk -- Boqvist -- Thompson
Foote -- Salminen -- Zetterlund

Siegenthaler -- Hamilton
Hughes -- Nemec
Okhotiuk/Bahl -- Mukhamadullin

Hellebuyck
Daws

Would have to see if cap works with Hellebuyck extension in 2025. But this team could be pretty solid.

Stars decline. Would need to be something along the lines of Faksa, Dobby, Stankoven, and a first. Equal cap would need to go both ways. And if you’re asking for one of our top forward prospects I wouldn’t give much more than that. Somebody would likely add more, but I think Stankoven is gonna be a stud
