Give them cap for Kadri and defense depth

Created by: Ledge_And_Dairy
Team: 2022-23 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 27, 2022
Published: Aug. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think the trade is fairly close. Both players are the same age and middle players. Beau has more experience so maybe a performance based conditional pick can be added going to NYI.

This trade should provide NYI with more room to sign Kadri and their other RFA's while also shoring up their left side.

For Calgary it adds another proven winger on a solid contract to provide more depth scoring

Would that give the Islanders cap space? Would Kylington command less than 4.2 Mill? Islanders also just acquired Romanov.

Almost certainly. I would pin him around 2.5M on a 1 year deal.

I know about Romanov but he is also pretty fresh and Kylington would provide more depth over rushing a prospect

Seriously? Then NYI would probably say yes if it was a bit more expanded (NYI can add Salo, CGY can add a mid-round pick or prospect). But I thought he was going to get a similar contract to Devon Toews (4 years, $4.1M per). Because if he does get a Toews-esque contract, NYI say no since they just acquired Romanov.

i'd be down for this honestly from the isles perspective, i like beau and would want to hold onto him but LD is a big need and i could see a pelech-dobson, kylington-pulock, romanov-mayfield top 6 being really good. just depends on salary, doesn't add much cap space unless he takes less than 3mil

Salo really isn't a need for the Flames: Valimaki, Mackey, Kuznetsov, Poirier in the pipeline.

Kylington had a good season but at 25 and only having 1 good season that was also fairly streaky he hasn't proven he is worth 4M

Both trades work for both teams imo. I like it.

I would like to see Mang get a chance to play on the 1st line this year and See how good he can be.

Thanks for making the case why NYI shouldnt do this. It doesnt make sense to commit at least 2.5 to their 3LD. They obviously believe romanov can play top 4 minutes this season otherwise that trade doesnt make sense so kylington is very redundant. Salo looked good in a small sample last year but even if its not him it would be a mistake to spend more than ~1m for that last d spot. They need that $ for the F core.

Your points are invalid. You argue that they believe Romanov can play top 4 minutes but he hasn't done anything to prove that. Even then running 3 pairings has proven to be way better than overloading 1 and 2 time and time again. Nothing about Kylington is redundant when he provides offense that NYI's d-core severely lacks

Reason 1 - romanov played top 4 minutes with MTL.
Reason 2 - nobodys trading 13oa for a 3rd pair defensman.
Mayfield and salo or bolduc or aho or a sub 1m free agent id venture is one of the better 3rd pairings in the league. Selling low on beau for a 25yo who had 1 good season to make the 3rd pair from the 10th best 3rd pair to the best is a terrible idea. Not to mention that the only reason to trade beauvillier is for significant cap relief. Getting 1.5m extra cap isnt nearly enough to move beau.

1. Montreal was a disaster last year, playing top 4 there really doesn't mean that much
2. How much time do you expect your "3rd pair" to play? i would imagine 17+ minutes a game
3. Sure, that's just an opinion though and I disagree with it.

Which of these d-cores would you say is better for a contender?
Pelech - Dobson
Kylington - Pulock
Romanov - Mayfield

or

Pelech - Dobson
Romanov - Pulock
Salo - Mayfield

Im not saying salo is better than kylington. Its just not worth it to trade beau for that upgrade plus the fact that kylington costs 1.7m more than salo.
You talk about isles needing more offense from the d core and youre right. But imo its addition by subtraction. Chara was an unmitigated disaster. Greene was also very bad put played sheltered minutes. Just having competent players on the left side is alreadu a big upgrade. Kylington at this point isnt a necessity but a luxury, and a luxury not worth the price of beau.
The isles need scoring, and beau will help with that, more than kylington would.

The entire idea here is that Lou is trying to sign Kadri but is only short a couple mill in cap room. However I am also assuming there are no takers on Bailey for any reasonable price. Same way Columbus had to move Bjorkstrand for dirt cheap instead of someone like Nyqvist or Voracek.

While I get what you are saying about competent players you are also just assuming Romanov will both slide in seamlessly and instantly be a top 4 guy on a contender

Whether romanov is or isnt a competent top 4 dman on a contender doesnt matter bc management obviously believes he is. Bc they wouldnt have traded 13oa if they thought he was a 3rd pair guy. He also fits perfectly with dobson (and not so much with mayfield) plus i still expect mayfield to be playing 20 minutes a night and pelech and pulocks minutes arent gonna decrease and dobson will get more time so when you look at it romanov will be playing some pk time and 2nd pair 5v5 and the last spot (probably salo) will end up playing like 15-16 minutes a night. It doesnt make sense to get kylington for that role and it doesnt make sense to move beau for someone to fill that spot.

Im not arguing whether they think that or not. And you also don't know if he fits perfectly with Dobson or not (or with Mayfield for that matter). Personally I think Dobson pairs best with Pelech and that they should separate Pelech and Pulock for this reason.

If you think Mayfield is going to be playing more than 17 minutes a night (you even say 20 minutes) then so should his partner no? Not sure how you math'ed out 15-16 minutes there.

I also feel like you never even read the first part of my last post at all

Oh i certainly read the 1st part of your last post just didnt have anything to add to it so i didnt. Not really sure what you wanted me to say to that.

I dont know for sure he fits perfectly with dobson but stylistically it makes a lot of sense. As for mayfield we do know that bc mayfield needs someone who can carry the puck someone who can distribute the puck well and thats not the basis of romanovs game. Mayfield isnt a black hole with the puck hes ok with it but at times he does struggle to get the puck out and pairing him with someone else who doesnt make the best outlet passes will lead to disaster. He also isnt the most creative with the puck and neither is romanov so you wont really have anyone running the offense from the blueline, nobody to make plays up there and keep possessions alive.
I love the pelech-dobson fit however i dont agree with splitting up P&P for it. Those 2 are so good together that unless you have to carry 3 different dmen it should stay together. Dobson mayfield romanov and #6 is a solid enough bottom 4 that P&P should stay intact. They dominate when theyre together and should only be broken up if its desperately needed.

At a more basic level mayfield will be playing heavy minutes on the pk and late in games with leads. I dont expect #6 (whether its salo or someone else) to play a lot of special teams at all or play late in close games so much especially not early in the year.

If we assume 4 minutes of pp time per game (and it could be less but i am being pretty conservative with the top 3 so it should even out) where theres only 1 dman on the ice there should be 116 minutes to fill.
Pelech - 21
Pulock - 21
Dobson - 21
Romanov - 19
Mayfield - 19
Salo - 15
This is the rough breakdown of TOI imo

Caps decline this, the management in DC seems to not be willing to play one of the LD prospects in our system already, and Valimaki would get stuck in the same loop as Alexeyev and Johansen. I think the Caps would rather hang on to Leason who could be more useful this year.

Leason can't pass through waivers anymore so the idea of this trade is both players fill a team need while also avoiding waivers

Oh really? Could have sworn he had a year left. That’s frustrating then, since he definitely won’t clear them.
