Trades
1.
EDM
  1. 2024 4th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Jets add a much-needed bottom 6 winger. Foegele absolutely helps their depth and they have cap space because nobody wants to play in Winnipeg, so you may as well use it.
WPG
  1. Foegele, Warren
Additional Details:
Unfortunate cap casualty. I think Foegele should have value, but in this world where Pacioretty is a cap dump, the Oilers may even have to give up a mid-round pick.
2.
EDM
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Dallas needs to replace Klingberg if they want to have any good transition play on their back-end outside of Heiskanen. Barrie is very talented offensively and would do well with Lindell as his partner.
DAL
  1. Barrie, Tyson
Additional Details:
Would have liked to keep Barrie on this team but against the salary cap, it's pretty much impossible.
3.
EDM
  1. Meier, Timo ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Sharks sell high on Meier in the season before he gets paid. Using the DeBrincat trade as a comparable, the No. 7 pick + the 3rd rounder are worth about the same as two later firsts, one of which being in 2023. Benson could likely play for the sharks this season in a bottom 6 role, and if not can be a leading offensive presence in the AHL. Lavoie is a ~C grade prospect with middle-six upside added as sweetener.
SJS
  1. Benson, Tyler
  2. Lavoie, Raphael
  3. 2023 1st round pick (EDM)
  4. 2024 1st round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers give up two important draft picks to go all in on this season. Meier at a 3 million cap hit would be huge for the Oilers and would solidify their top 6 as one of, if not THE best, in the entire league. Deciding what to do with Meier next off-season would be a huge challenge, but for this season his production will go a long way.
4.
EDM
  1. Sandin, Rasmus [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Contract negotiations with Sandin are supposedly at an impasse. The leafs have Reilly, Muzzin, Brodie, Holl, Giordano, Liljegren, and Sandin. One of the 7 has to go, and it seems like it will be Sandin. The leafs load up on two seconds here they can use in a trade later.
TOR
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (DAL)
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Oilers are betting on Sandin here. He's looked good in a somewhat small sample size and a sheltered role. The Oilers D core is risky because it's very young, but that also means it has massive upside to vastly outperform expectations. You need to make gambles to win, and this is definitely one of them.

Meier has a $10M qualifying offer, I don't know if the Oilers could even think about offering him that.. He's one of the strangest cases of a rental player this season because if a competitive team makes a move for him they may have to let him walk for nothing at the end of the year.

I highly doubt that the Oilers get a 2nd rounder for Barrie, and the Stars don't have the cap or roster space for him. They don't need a Klingberg replacement, they have Miro as the true #1 now and Harley who is a young offensive defenseman.

Klinger and Barrie are horrible even strength players. Do the occasional nice set ups make up for being trashtastic defensively? I personally don’t think so. Only place we’re gonna miss Klinger is on the PP. Even if Nill wanted to “replace Klinger” we don’t have the cap

Jets decline, as they won't want to pay a 4th line winger $2.75 million for the next two years. They will probably play Barron or Gustafsson there (whoever isn't the C on that line).
