Calgary won the trade now that both signed. But the trade will age better for Florida.

It all depends when the contract drop off points are for Huberdeau and Weegar. If both can dish out 5-6 really good years before they fall off, it looks more that Calgary won. In the short term, Calgary definitely won, although in the long run, I’m not sure. Based on Florida’s team composition and the lackluster nature of their dcore, their is a relatively high possibility that Florida misses the playoffs for a couple of years. I guess it all depends on which team can do more damage in the playoffs.

    This is a great summation.

Frankly, more so than the loss of Weegar and Huberdeau (even if Tkatchuk is in his place), I think the lack of 1sts is going to spell trouble for the team, particularly if they miss the playoffs. They’ll really need to hope some mid-rounders pop off - not only are those fewer cost-controlled prospects to develop, it’s also fewer trade-chips to fill gaps in the roster.

Because of that, and with their cap problems (*cough* Bob *cough*), FLA is more or less stuck with this roster for the near future. For better, and for worse.

You're better off with Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar. It was obvious from the get go that neither Gaudreau or Tkachuk were staying in Calgary. The Americans wanted to play in the States.

Calgary also got a 1st which balances the future value. Even if Hub and Weegar drop off they may still have a good young player from that 1st to offset Tkachuk being in his prime.

The Islanders also won by not signing a 32 year old Nazem Kadri to a 7x$7M when they already have 4 Cs under contract for at least the next 3 seasons.
