Quoting: Dutchies
WHy would the Leafs pay that massive amount for someone to take him, when we can just put him on LTIR and use the cap space? Even if we couldn't, this is a brutal deal.
They can only do that if he is out indefinitely.
If he is periodically hurt for a few weeks at a time, they need to maintain a fluid cap situation so that they have enough cap space to activate him for his short periods of play between hurting himself.
I assume based on Buffalo being on his NTC, he probably has all the rebuilding/cap dump teams on his no trade list. He wants to be in Toronto, he will not waive to go anywhere else.
The Sens got lucky to find a mark to move him. I highly doubt the Leafs will be that lucky. His buyout cap hit next season is 687.5k for Toronto, and then 2M the season after that. If things don't work out, I could see Toronto using a buyout. Assuming Murray would be buried in the AHL otherwise, they would save roughly 3M next season and 1.6M the season after that. The only caveat is that Murray would have to be cleared of injuries to get bought out.
The other alternative would be to attach a 1st round pick to Murray and see if someone would acquire him in the off season with the expectation that they buyout Murray. Toronto could still sign Murray after a different team buys him out for them (See Orpik WSH/COL). They could offer Murray a 1-2 year 1.125M contract as part of the deal. Murray loses 2.64M as part of a buyout, so he would mostly be made whole. If he fails again, they can bury him in the AHL at no consequence to them, and work on trying to rehab his game.
