If The Leafs Were To Swing One Giant Trade Whose Your Guy

Description
We constantly hear about how Toronto is forever looking to add a top 6 forward, which isn't a surprise considering the media in Toronto constantly drumming up rumors for clicks. That being said, I think it would be fun for Toronto to make a gigantic trade this season, and frankly it's a theory that does have some legs to it considering Dubas' job is ACTUALLY on the line. There are currently a plethora of big names out on the market, so if you were an advisor for Kyle Dubas and you HAD to make a trade for one big name, who would you pick?

My choice is Timo Meier. Not sure where SJS stands with Meier, and to be honest it seems as if Grier is trying to build a playoff team (whether he has been successful thus far or not), but Meier is a pending RFA and the Sharks could get a TON of value to kickstart a rebuild. It seems wise for the Sharks to sell high on their big names, get some good futures, and tank this year in an extremely good draft class (Bedard, Michkov, Fantilli, Benson, Wood, Yager. Take your pick). Not sure how much sense it makes for the Sharks, but I think it's a pretty perfect fit for the Leafs. Obviously there are a few things that affect the fit, like the cap hit, the pending contract, the likely steep price, and much more. It would take a few shenanigans for the cap to work, but I think it's an interesting concept.

Anyways, whose your pick?

Meier's qualifying offer makes him an automatic no for me. It's 10 million aav, he is not a 10 million dollar player

Meier would be awesome but the QO makes things incredibly messy. I feel like a defensive defenceman is moreso needed if Muzzin is gonna be out for most of the year (whether from this injury or another one). It wouldn’t be my choice for the “big swing” but I feel like if one is going to be made it will be for Chychrun

Im wondering if Dubas does a Colorado approach rather than a Spend a tonne on 1 guy approach

As last deadline Colorado went out and got

Lehkonen
Cogliano
Sturm (Mostly done to cap dump Jost)
and
Manson

And if we look they got 2 big pieces and 2 4th liners without spending an actual first (they did spend their 1st round prospect for Lehkonen)

Maybe Toronto should look at that approach. Rather than go and get Kane go get a few guys

Dubas has typically taken this approach during the recent deadlines (ex. 2021 TDL acquired Foligno, Hutton, Rittich, Nash) and it hasn't worked. With his job security actually being in doubt this year, he may go big. I do however prefer the Avs approach at last year's TDL as padding around the edges to a contending team is the best method to push the team over the top

The problem is, Foligno, Hutton, Rittich and Nash are not on the same level as the guys the AV's went out and got.

Manson addressed the feistyness they need on D along with EJ to make it hard to play against, but they also had Makar, Girard, Byram as studs, the leafs have Reilly who may fit a Girard mold, but that's it.

For Manson and Lehkonen, they gave up 2 high prospect defenseman, Toronto doesn't have the organizational depth to give away blue-chip prospects like that.

Toronto has too many holes, and not enough cap room. Of all the teams, Covid screwed the leafs over the most, the top 5 guys contracts only look worse now with the cap stagnation, 2 years of growth would've given them wiggle room, they are not in an enviable position as their window tightens and teams in the east start getting better.

Not entirely. Dubas is more selective. He doesnt like giving up big prospects. Now yes he did spend big once back in 2020 and results werent great (not all his fault but yeah not the greatest adds).

This time do the same but choose proper guys

For instance

SJS got some interesting deadline pieces

Reimer
Bonino
Lorenz

But this is all dependent on how the teams doing by then. Whose hurt and whats the need
