This Pens Team Could have been Scary Great- IF -we had just a Decent GM

Created by: Sidstick87
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 6, 2022
Published: Nov. 6, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. McCann, Jared
Additional Details:
▬ There is NOT a sane GM out there that would have Protected a 37-38yr old C/RW over a 25yr old C/LW w/ McCann's Speed / Skill / Shot & Position versatility
SEA
  1. Carter, Jeff
Additional Details:
** And then u Re-Sign that 38yr old, after wasting a protection pick on him?? Like is this all a Joke??
2.
PIT
  1. Gaudreau, Frédérick
Additional Details:
▬ Freddy was so good here once he came up from WBS..... We couldnt give him 2yr @ $1.2m Per??
MIN
  1. McGinn, Brock
Additional Details:
- Seriously.... U gave him 4yrs @ $2.75m to do what, exactly??
3.
PIT
  1. Anderson-Dolan, Jaret
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (LAK)
LAK
  1. Dumoulin, Brian
Additional Details:
▬ Anyone w/ any Hockey sense has seen how Dumo has been Declining for 4yrs now & if we moved him in the 21'-22' Off-Season... we could have still got some value for him then.
4.
PIT
  1. Comrie, Eric
Additional Details:
▬ When we could have Signed a younger w/ much more up-side Goalie at the same exact Cap #???
BUF
  1. DeSmith, Casey
Additional Details:
- Why would we Re-Sign an Injury prone 30+ yr old Goalie who has been solid but never there when it matters for the last 2yrs?
5.
PIT
    Rutta is a solid 3rd Pairing BUT just not a need here. No Chance I'd sign a 32yr old #3 RHD-man for 3yrs @ $2.75m Per
    6.
    PIT
    1. Matheson, Michael
    2. 2023 4th round pick (PIT)
    Additional Details:
▬ The Pens were a Old & Slow team that needed to get Younger & Faster this Off-Season :
    - So we Trade our Elite 27yr old Fastest Skater for a Declining 34yr old??
    MTL
    1. Petry, Jeff
    Additional Details:
    2. Poehling, Ryan

▬ Another 34yr old Declining Slow Player, Like what was Hextall thinking?
    7.
    PIT
      1. Poehling, Ryan

      - Now this type of Trade to get Poehling, I could see doing.
      MTL
      1. Nylander, Alexander
      2. 2023 4th round pick (PIT)
      8.
      PIT
      1. Marino, John
      Additional Details:
WHY Trade a 25yr old Top RHD-man w/ his skill set & a fair long term deal in place??
      * Young Top 4 RHD don't grow on trees

Why Trade a young player like Marino bc of an extended sophomore Slump, So DUMB of MoRon & very smart of NJD for taking advantage of a lost GM
      NJD
      1. Smith, Ty
      2. 2023 3rd round pick (NJD)
      Additional Details:
      - I like Smith a lot & he could be a great Top 4 Dman in 2 or 3yrs..... But how does that help now???
      9.
      PIT
      1. Zacha, Pavel
      Additional Details:
      *Traded w/ [NJD] ▬NOT▬ [BOS]

      - Now this would have been a more fair Trade w/ NJD this last Off-season.
      BOS
      1. Kapanen, Kasperi
      Additional Details:
▬ This was the 1 Off-Season Trade that everyone wanted :
      {I liked Kappy BUT it was time}
      - A Kappy for a young higher pick that was also struggling type Trade.

      * Not giving him a 2yr Contract at the Same cap #.... I mean, Come On.
      10.
      DAL
        - The Smarter / Better / Cheaper - Signing of a #3 RHD-man this off-season.
        11.
        FLA
          - Would have claimed Mahura off of Waivers, Big fan of his since a 3rd Rdr w/ ANA.
          12.
          FLA
            - Would have signed White, the very next day that he got bought out.

Where is the part where you dont resign Letang and Malkin until 100 years old and rebuild?

That's just silly, you don't rebuild with Crosby still on your team. Letang and Malkin are still elite players, and if you don't agree with that well they are at least a top 4 and top 6 F respectively, having them at 12.2m isn't going to kill the team down the road.

Keeping Carter (even if he's great to have in the playoff-he's a veteran luxury) over McCann was a clear mistake, don't need to have incredible foresight to have guessed that it wasn't going to be the right move. The Marino trade was a head scratcher too but I guess he was the easiest move, surprised they couldn't get a better return though.

Comrie signed in Buffalo because he knew he was going to be the stater. He wouldn’t have signed to penguins because of Jarry being the starter.

As a non Pens fan I agree with this, lots of puzzling moves by management when the obvious move was right in front of them.

As another commented though Comrie probably still signs in Buffalo as there was more opportunity there then being Jarry's backup.

I keep seeing this about Comrie.

He went to buffalo to start. Not Pittsburgh to be a back up.

            You’re right
The geno and letang contracts are not the problem with this team… when those contracts become bad the team will be bad and it literally won’t matter anymore bc then we’ll actually rebuild lol 😂
Still regret losing both McCann and Tanev in hextalls botched expansion draft
Ngl I would have given up a 2nd or a good prospect to have SEA take a contract

I don't remember the expansion rules or Pittsburgh's situation, but did they really just trade McCann to protect Carter? Doesn't add up to me, I checked to see if Carter had trade protection on his previous contract but no, maybe it had to do with a different rule. Carter is great and a got with a lot of playoff experience but they have Crosby, Malkin and Letang.

They traded McCann to Toronto to avoid losing him for nothing bc McCann was the obvious pick
(McCann ended up being seattles pick from tor as they used McCann as bait to avoid losing other players)
Also McCann was cheap then and pit wanted to try to force Seattle to take a big contract (pettersson matheson zucker) but Seattle finessed us and took our heart and soul Tanev

The rumour is carter only agreed to waive his ntc to come to pit bc hextall promised him a new contract and expansion protection so he could stay in pit

The rumour is carter only agreed to waive his ntc to come to pit bc hextall promised him a new contract and expansion protection so he could stay in pit

So the real goal was to get out of a big contract, so they traded the obvious pick (McCann) for their former B-prospect thinking that they wouldn't want Tanev. How unfortunate.

It’s not like the tanev 6 year monstrosity is gonna be a good contract but he was arguably the best bottom-6 winger we’ve had in a while…

Should just given up a pick to keep them both 😔

Who was drafted with their 1st that year? Maybe he makes you forget about them both.

So we had traded our 2020 1st for to MIN for zucker but that was the covid year and bc we didn’t make the actual round of 16 playoffs we conditionalized that pick to 2021

We then traded our 2020 first to Toronto for kapanen

Jesper wallstedt (G) was minnesotas pick that year

Did they have a pick last draft? That's probably what it would have cost them or whatever their next 1st would have been at that time.
