Coyotes 2023 TDL Moves

Created by: MoserForNorris
Team: 2022-23 Arizona Coyotes
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 10, 2022
Published: Nov. 10, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Chychrun:
He will NOT get moved at this year's TDL.
Chychrun will end up being a draft day move when the Coyotes have an idea of where teams are picking and who needs what. Assuming he comes back and performs admirably for the Coyotes, I still think he could garner the 1st rounder pick, top prospect and younger player in return that has been talked about frequently. But with his latest injury and surgery, teams will want to see that he can play at the level they're expecting from him.

Schmaltz:
Similar to Chychrun, he will NOT get moved at this year's TDL.
There are rumors that Bill Armstrong has been taking calls on Schmaltz and after a near PPG year last year his contract will make it hard to be moved during the season. Likely slotted to play with Keller and Boyd, whom he had some serious chemistry with last year, his value could become more neutral as opposed to the negative value his contract carried when originally signed.
Trades
1.
ARI
  1. Aho, Sebastian
  2. 2023 2nd round pick (NYI)
  3. 2024 4th round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
Explanation:
Islanders could be looking to improve their powerplay (19.1% as of 11/10/22). Taking a shot on an expiring Ghost that has been playing well since moving to Arizona prior to the 21-22 season could be the injection they'd be looking for.

Pick could be conditional depending on playoff production or percentage of playoff games player on a deep (Stanley Cup Finals) run.

Aho is more of a throw in in my mind. I don't really follow the Islanders closely, but I have noticed (mainly from stat watching) that he seems to be disappointing for someone receiving over 62% of his starts in the O-Zone.
NYI
  1. Gostisbehere, Shayne ($2,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Coyotes continue to stockpile valuable picks for the upcoming drafts in hopes of eventually packing a few together to move up.
2.
ARI
  1. 2024 4th round pick (NYR)
Additional Details:
Trade could be with any team looking to add cheap center depth with some PK abilities. Has been a pleasant surprise for the Coyotes this year as a dependable piece down the middle.
3.
ARI
  1. Scandella, Marco
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (STL)
Additional Details:
This trade is based on the rumors that Doug Armstrong is looking to improve his bottom 6 and Friedman mentioning Ritchie as a potential fit.

Ritchie has been a decent vet for the Coyotes this season and has had a knack for scoring on the powerplay. If the Blues really do need the help up front, then Ritchie for a 2nd or 3rd, depending on retention, could fit fairly well.
STL
  1. Ritchie, Nick ($1,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Arizona takes back Scandella who likely won't play for the Blues every again due to injury but will help them reach the floor for the 23-24 season.
4.
ARI
  1. Smith, Craig
Additional Details:
Depending on health, Smith is likely getting dealt before January 2023 as the Bruins will be looking to clear salary to activate Forbort and McAvoy from IR.

Smith still holds some value if the Bruins are willing to retain 50%, but I don't see them willing to do so. Likely, he will get waived and either go unclaimed or get traded for pennies on the dollar.

Flipping him for Stetcher, who is also a UFA after this season, adds depth for the Bruins after presumably losing Reilly at some point due to the same situation.
BOS
  1. Stecher, Troy
Additional Details:
Coyotes would likely look to flip Smith with retention, but I could see him filling a hole in their RW depth after the departure of a few guys during the TDL taking up the rest of their retention slots.

Ghost wouldn’t replace Dobson or Pulock on the PP.

I’d rather just play Salo or call up Bolduc.

There's no chance he'd replace Dobson, but Pulock is a different type of D-Man on the PP if I'm not mistaken. Ghost would be the facilitator up top while Pulock is looking for the one timer on his offside.

Back-up plan to Bolduc? Call him up soon and if doesn't work out then go after Ghost at the TDL.

McAvoy is likely playing this weekend, so activating him isn’t an issue. Lots can happen between now and when Forbort needs to be activated, but I think most of it will work itself out.

I really don’t think the bruins trading smith for a lesser player, at a position of less need, is a thing.

Pulock used to be on his offside, now he runs the PP at the top. PP1 usually takes up 1:30 TOI so PP2 doesn’t get much time out there anyways.

Bolduc is the backup plan. I expect Salo is back in tonight.

If Reilly goes unclaimed, then how does McAvoy play tonight? I think that Reilly gets moved then the backend isn't nearly as well built out as originally thought, unless you believe in Stralman or Renouf.
Lindholm - McAvoy
Gryz - Carlo
Forbort - Clifton
Zboril - Stralman? Renouf?

LD would be a secondary trade target for me - the bigger need for the Islanders is on the wings.

That being said, if the price is right, I'm not saying no to depth players at LD. There's zero experience behind Salo/Aho as it currently stands so having a veteran body in case of injury wouldn't be the end of the world. This trade is aiming a bit higher - and if it turns out by February that the Salo/Aho combo isn't producing, it would be an idea to think about.

Forbort to LTIR

Forbort and Clifton have been great as the 2nd pair to start the year. If that’s the 3rd pair when everyone healthy it’s an elite D corp.

I thought Forbort was already on LTIR so that's my mistake.

Stralman and renouf play a completely different position than reilly, so they don’t come into the equation. Forbort is LTIR bound, so that’s how McAvoy is activated, no need to move anyone before activating him.

Kind of unrelated, but stralman and renouf stink. I hope they waive Stralman and get him off this roster.

Incidentally, when your question marks start on the 8th d man in a scenario that already involves moving a d man off the roster, that’s a good thing.

How about a mike reilly to play ahead of salo/aho for free?

What?

Deleted after seeing that Forbort wasn't on LTIR yet, thought he was so still questioning how they'd activate McAvoy.

we got a couple more hours to find out if they did that - personally would not mind it one bit. the joke all summer long was "Reilly to NYI for a 3rd" was one of the only trades everyone on the boards could agree on, so getting him for free now would truly be a delight.
