Puljujarvi is a dominant 2 way player who makes McDavid better, buying low on him to play with Barzal would be a smart move. https://twitter.com/zjlaing/status/1591097977204281345?s=46&t=A1C8FH7t_pWgwplUfQeGwQ

And Islanders need to add Räty to a Meier trade if they want any chance of beating out other teams like NJ and Holtz.
Räty is at minimum a year away from the NHL, and even when he makes it, he won’t have the immediate impact that Meier would have. Getting Barzal a 40G, 80P caliber winger before players like Nelson/Lee/JGP start their decline is IMO too good to pass up for the chance that Räty develops to a player of Meiers caliber down the road. (And I’m one of Räty’s biggest fans, I would hate to see him leave).

Not to mention the typical prospect included on a Meier trade from the isles on this site is Dufour who to me is a boom or BUST player. I’m a shark fan and a little biased but I want Raty 1000x over Dufour.

I can love him as a prospect while still seeing the bigger picture. He’s the one of the best prospects the Isles have had in ages, but imo his ceiling is a high end 2C, so it would be foolish to not be open to trading him for the top line winger to pair with Barzal that’s been lacking from this team for years. Räty, like any prospect, can bust and never even sniff the NHL, while Meier is a star forward who immediately launches the Isles into Stanley Cup contention.

If Puljujarvi is worth a 4 x $4M contract, why would Edmonton trade him for that package?

This is a trade that you might want to make, but the isles would never give up Raty and a 1st for Meier. A 1st + sure, there are not many teams who can afford to sign him next season so that brings his price in a trade down.

Can you tell me the last time a center prospect of Raty’s caliber was traded for a winger? I can’t think of one trade

Not sure how you can have this take about Raty. His worst cast scenario is prime Nazim Kadri lol.

I forgot about that trade - yeah that’s all I need to know why I would never make this trade. And pacioretty is great, but Suzuki is a stud center, that will always be more valuable

Exactly lol. I just don’t think Raty comes up this year cause he’s a sliding scale candidate. Time to bring up Iskhavov.

Imo islanders are in need of a star winger more than a *potential* star center, especially when they have Barzal and Nelson (40G pace the past 2 seasons) down the middle. The biggest failure of the islanders in the past 10-15 years is the lack of talent to play with their stars. It’s why Tavares left, and why Barzal hasn’t hit his true potential yet. Räty could be a Suzuki, but he could also be a Glass or Krebs. Trading *potential* in a position of strength for the sure thing in a position of need is something I would do all day.

The thing is you're significantly overpaying for a player who hasn't been consistent enough to be labeled a star - right now he's an average 1st line winger. The mindset you have about trading for Meier is exactly what forced Ottawa and San Jose into mediocrity. The duchene trade for Ottawa , Karlsson trade for San Jose.

Jordan Eberle playing with Barzal was nearly identical to Timo Meier's impact over the last 3 seasons - so its not true that Barzal has never had lack of talent. Eberle was one of the best 5v5 generators in the league.

Trading "potential" is how the isles almost gave up Barzal, Sorokin and a 1st for Duchene. Krebs is still on pace to be a top 6 center, so not Sure why you brought him up.

Im not opposed to trading for Meier, but a. 1st AND Raty is a fireable offense because it overvalues Meier and undervalues the 2023 1st and Raty. true Contenders would never make that trade

That is not Raty’s worst case lmfao. His worst case is not making the NHL or being a bottom 6 C. Prime Kadri (a 1C) is closer to his ceiling, not his floor. The only prospects in hockey whose floors are 1C’s are Bedard and Fantilli, and Räty is nowhere close to those two.

Raty has a high floor and a high ceiling. His floor is a play driving two way 2C, similar to danualt. His ceiling is a PPG 1C.

This is Raty's star and NHL probability even with his draft year team burying him on the 4th line with no powerplay time. If he was on jukurit in his draft year he would have been a top 5 pick and his star probability would be over 50%
