"Crazy Contract"

Any defenseman on pace for 120 points in a season is worth whatever contract they have. And you want the sharks to trade that away with an insane amount of retention for mediocre prospects and a 3rd.

Reading this was so infuriating I had to come out of hibernation.

EK65 is pretty much getting a point each time he's on the ice right now. 11 goals 17 assists 28 points in 19 games. He's a fantasy hockey legend for those who took him in the late rounds. 😁

His contract is a risky one to take with his NMC and being pretty buyout proof. He's elite right now but he's probably going to be bad for 2/5 or 3/5 years. So with that in mind the team taking him on would need to be prepared for that. His production on the year is bound to come down especially if he's traded to a competitive team.

The Sharks are obviously going to want to get out of that contract but also paying his salary. So, you're absolutely correct that an offer like that doesn't get 50% retention since they are still paying half his salary and Karlsson is playing like a 9m+ dman. With 4.5m retention they should be able to get a significant return.

I think perhaps they would take the above deal for 2m retention at most.

I can't wait to see how poorly this ages. The 120 point pace will drop significantly

He's not elite, he's just off to an unsustainable start. He'll return to the mean soon enough. Or he'll get hurt and fall way off. You don't turn back the clock for long when you are nearing your mid 30's.

They will try to sell him off as such though, and whether he is or not he only has this year and the next probably at best. So other teams will be well aware of that.

You clearly have no idea what the Sharks think of Karlsson besides what you read from Hockeybuzz or Seravalli.

Of course you do. You've been gifted a defenseman that is on pace for a season like no one has seen since Brian Leetch.

It ain't happening kiddo.

I'm sure the Sharks think highly of Karlsson as a player and person, so for what reason would they be shopping him if not to get out of his contract? Maybe Karlsson wants out despite what he claimed but that doesn't mean management has to try trading him if they didn't want to get out of his contract. Maybe you say "They want to cash in on his high value because they are rebuilding", I would ask "Why would they risk trading an elite, coveted asset, unless he's expected to drop off sometime over the contract?" If you're saying they aren't actually shopping him, well don't blame me for not being a part of SJ's management and taking the word of insiders.

Maybe your issue with my post was where I said "I think perhaps they would take the above deal for 2m retention at most". Then, at this stage I would say they wouldn't retain at all for that offer and they would probably not take it. I do think they could take that package if it included a 1st for Karlsson at 9.5m. That doesn't mean that they won't want much more. I doubt Karlsson ends up in Toronto unless one of their core players is headed out anyways.
