Who is the best like-for-like replacement for Nate Bastian

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2022-23 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 28, 2022
Published: Nov. 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Nate Bastian is out with should injury and the longer we wait on official timetable, the worse we expect the news to be. A full dislocation requiring surgery could put him out for season. If we looked for a replacement in the trade market, who would be some good names that could fill that role?

Bastian: Big, young, high-motor, physical, great along boards, useful net-front player, zero stick handling, adequate skating, mediocre hands, willing to drop the mitts, on inexpensive deal, playing 4th line, Penalty Kill and some net-front on Power Play.

There is not an obvious name internally to take Bastian’s role. Zetterlund is probably the most likely candidate, but he has been playing in a more offensive role in lineup (most recently on Hischier line).

Josh Anderson

That would be a big, physical and fast 4th line.
Wood -- McLeod -- Anderson

Anderson (50% retained) for Johnsson and 2023 2nd round pick maybe.

Hathaway. He's been part of a strong 4th line in WAS for a few years now.

This feels like the time to cherry pick a guy out of another team's AHL squad that's just blocked at the NHL level.

From the Islanders, I'd think about Otto Koivula - he's 6'5", 220, pretty physical (20 hits in 20 NHL GP, no idea if AHL keeps track of hits), has a decent scoring touch (4-7-11 in 14 GP this year). Not a fighter but I think that with Brendan Smith & Miles Wood on hand the Devils can make up for it. Signed for $800K this year and next, would probably cost a mid/late-rounder at best. I'm sure there are a dozen other guys like this kicking around the AHL on other teams, too.

We don’t need to make a deal. There is enough to pick from on our AHL squad

Stylistically, there really isn't much that is similar to Bastian.
Zetterlund is probably the most likely option (with Holtz slotting higher into lineup).
Foote could probably step in.
Halonen maybe, but too slow.
Dugan maybe, but lacks aggressive nature.

But if Nate is out for the season, I'd hope we'd consider trading for a replacement if we can one.

Geertsen is good for about 4 min a night.
Bastian was getting 13-14 and was on PP, PK.

If Bastian was out for a week, sure. But for rest of season, yikes.

I don’t think we need another Nate Bastian though. Especially when our replacements have a bit less grit and a bit more skill. Bastian has a place on this team, but his replacement doesn’t need to play like him

If he is out for season, I would disagree. Especially if we are adding Holtz in place of Bastian and eventually replacing Smith with Luke Hughes.

We need some 'heavy" in there.
We saw how Trouba played head-hunter last night...just skating around looking for a thunderhit. (and he whiffed a few times lol).
We need protection...so that our top-6 can play an honest game.
