Crazy Idea

Created by: fangm
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 9, 2022
Published: Dec. 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
VAN
  1. Abruzzese, Nick
  2. Engvall, Pierre
  3. Holl, Justin
  4. Kerfoot, Alexander
  5. Robertson, Nicholas
  6. 2023 1st round pick (TOR)
  7. 2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
  8. 2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
  9. 2025 3rd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
The Canucks need to make a move and while Boeser and Horvat are nice ideas, Petterson will bring in a massive haul that allows for an instant retool and potentially spark the team to be competitive next year. This trade also gives so much cap flexibility with most of the NHL players in expiring deals so ones that make sense at the right price can be brought back while th rest are let go.
TOR
  1. Åman, Nils
  2. Dries, Sheldon
  3. Pettersson, Elias
  4. Schenn, Luke
Additional Details:
For Toronto it makes sense since Tavares needs to move to the wing in the next 1-2 years to keep his production up so Petterson can replace him to keep the solid 1-2 down the middle. Cap space works as Petterson+Schenn replaces Kerfoot+Muzzin so its about 8M into Toronto and 9M out.

Tavares needing to move to LW seems more like fantasy. Leafs are depending on Kerfoot leaving as UFA, and replacing him with 1m player which saves 2.5. Really the Leafs can't afford Petterson as they need cap to complete their roster such resigning Bunting , Kampf and others. Besides a lot of future to give up.

I wouldn't trade Pettersson for Matthews given the difference in team control.

Canucks decline easily. As people are always saying on this site, "when you trade a star player, you command quality over quantity." Quite frankly, this offer has pretty much no quality but all kinds of quantity. Robertson is a B+ prospect. He's a small winger, which is exactly the last thing the Canucks need to be acquiring with our surplus of wingers. Abruzzese is a 23 year old AHLer who may not even become an NHL regular. Best case scenario he becomes a bottom 6 centre, but again he's smaller and left handed, the last thing the Canucks need in a centre. Kerfoot, Holl, and Engvall are all rentals who hold no value to Vancouver. A late 1st, a 2nd and a couple of 3rd's are about the only pieces in this package that would be of any value to the Canucks. If the Canucks move Pettersson, which they shouldn't and won't, it will be for a Dobson type defensemen. They will not move Pettersson for a couple of prospects that they don't need, some rentals, and a few draft picks. Canucks probably counter by removing Pettersson from the deal and sending the offer back.

Your descriptions says "massive haul" but all I see in the trade is a bunch of spare parts with a 2023 first... This offer won't even get you Horvat as a rental.

I try hard but cannot see any Leaf offers that are remotely worth consideration.

Spare parts for good players cuz of cap allocation every time. No give to get.

Crazy Stupid idea cause *NEWS FLASH* It's a quantity for quality trade in favor of the subject team in the ACGM. Second of all, trading Pettersson wouldn't kickstart a retool, it would signify a scorched Earth rebuild which the Canucks don't need to do to get back on track.
