That price (acquisition price as well as his aav) along with that term scare me. If this was the 25 year old Parayko sure. We need to let Liljegren develope into our number 1 RHD and find similar player like Brodie to sign to reasonable term and AAV. I want to go after Connor Murphy. the cost of him would be much more reasonable with much more manageable risk.

Just looking up the general sentiment around Parayko on twitter doesn't really give me confidence that he is a number 1 D. literally nothing positive anywhere.

examples:

Quoting: Twitter
Colton Parayko hasn't been the same since Jay Bouwmeester and Alex Pietrangelo left.

He has unfortunately proven to need a veteran handler to thrive.

And he's paid like a No. 1. Bad contract thus far

Quoting: Twitter
All I want for Christmas is for the Blues to trade Colton Parayko.

Quoting: Twitter
Seriously…

What does Colton Parayko do ?

Like give me anything positive.

Quoting: Twitter
Parayko is awesome ! #stlblues let the excuses begin!
He’s still learning , poor d pairing , injuries , umm barometric pressure , he’s horrible !
Please move this guy he’s horrendous

Quoting: Twitter
Colton Parayko literally facing away from the play.
Stop putting this miserable piece of **** on the ice in these moments.
Always fails. ****ing cannot stand the most overrated player the Blues have ever had.

Quoting: Twitter
A no trade clause doesn’t mean you have to play.
(Which is also a good way to get someone to waive their no trade clause — see Doug Weight.)

Get Parayko out of this lineup one way or another. I was in his corner a long time but he is absolute trash.

Gives a good indication of his level of play on the first year of an 8 year deal that starts at the decline of most players in terms of age.

For the record you can't find a single positive tweet about Paraykos performance. They are all negative and the majority allude to it being a long term problem thats been going on. Crowd sourcing his performance from Blues fans isn't yielding a lot of positive results.

Correction: i found a semi positive tweet about him from a woman not wanting to complete a transaction for some blues apparel because the seller referred to Parayko as a giant tampon on skates.

The general consensus i have found is that he is failing the eye test.

His analytics aren't great either.

This is from the Athletic writer who covers the Blues.

"He eats ice time — more than 23 minutes per game, which is second behind Faulk — and his skating will often leave you in awe.
But the poor numbers (no goals, three assists) and analytics aside, there’s too much left to be desired.
The lack of positioning and scrambling on plays around his own net take away so much from the good he does."

Maybe try forming your own opinion?

Personally, I'll take the 6'5 RHD who got Conn Smythe votes while playing 25+ minutes per night enroute to the cup. Might have more to do with team structure but you always bet on talented, proven players

Trading for who players were vs who they are and will be for 8 years, are completely different things.

He didn't forget how to play hockey in the last 3 years. He'd fit in nicely beside either Sandin or Rielly. I don't even think the Leafs need to improve their d but this would make that a top 5 core. He's an extremely good player

If Caps move Eller it's to make space so they won't take anyone back. They'll take a 2nd or just those two 3rds.

I am all for the Leafs making a trade with St Louis, but not for Parayko but instead for ROR. Parayko's contract is inflated and has too much term and cap. I don't have any interest in him.
