the player we should have drafted

Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 20, 2022
Published: Dec. 20, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This IS NOT a conversion about the illness concern of Amirov.

That is sad and we all wish him well.

If everyone remembered Leaf fans and media alike, wanted Schneider to be Drafted because he fit so many of the Leafs current needs, a big skilled Rhd Dman.

Again do not come at me with Amirov's illness, this is NOT about that.

This is hockey related.

Wishing Amirov a speedy and healthy recovery.

I remember really wanting Schneider, but only because I thought Amirov was already going to be gone. He is a fantastic player and I was so happy when he fell to 15. I know he wasn't projected to go higher than 15, but I was of the belief that he would. He is an awesome player and an awesome guy. I wish him nothing but the best and can't wait for him to prove everyone wrong

Surprise the comments turned it into a thread concerning Amirov's health rather hockey related the first time it was removed.

This is a hockey related post.

At the time of the Draft the Leafs had many young forwards already in their pipeline, but the Dmen prospects were weak. So Schneider would have been a better pick in hindsight.

Even during the draft talk was Amirov would be a long term project and Schneider would be fast easier track to be Nhl ready.

I was hopeful for Schneider at the time. But Dubas has done well drafting overall so far. So no complaints from me.

Why should they have drafted Schneider over Amirov, this doesn’t answer your own question?

I never understood the Amirov selection. Left wingers and left handed defencemen are the most populous players....66% of player shoot left. There probably wasn't a big cap between talent Amirov, and selections picked slightly below him, RWer Dawson of NJ and Rangers RHD Schnedier.
Sorry I'll disagree with other who say Dubas has been good at drafting. Correct if I"m wrong, but on defence just Sandin and LIljegren...both first rounders...I should hope first rounders should be in the NHL.
Holmberg...a great pick in the sixth round and injured Robertson. So in his time as GM....he has drafted just four NHLers. And the Leafs NHL to be prospects isn' that promising.

Nah, amirov was a better prospect, and by the state of the leafs needs they need guys like amirov way more than they need defensemen

Amirov was a long term project when the Leafs already had many young forward prospects in the pipeline.

The Leafs have been dreaming about a Top 4 Rhd Dman for the last decade and the Leafs Dmen prospects in the pipeline were few to none.

Schneider was reported to be only 1 or 2 years away from being Nhl ready during the Draft.

The scouting reports confirms this.

I remember wanting Schneider but I also remember that Amirov was projected to go in the 15-20 range. Were you just higher on him than most people or am I forgetting something?

It would be awesome if Amirov came back and played in the NHL. I wish him all the best. But before the illness I was starting to think the pick might have been a bit of a reach.

Because when your team drafts later than 15th over all it takes much much longer for players to become nhl guys, this happens to literally every good team unless they get lucky. Dubas also had the bad luck of having robetson and amirov run into terrible health issues he had no way of predicting

Neat, except that Defencemen taken outside the top 10 almost always take years to become nhl players, anyone who knows anything about drafting knows this, and schnieder getting fed in the nhl the last two years simply makes that point.

Dubas never Drafted Liljegren, Dubas Drafted Dermott (by all accounts Mark Hunter wanted him, Dubas wanted Aho, if you believe the story, probably NYI Aho, not Car Aho) and Durzi, both Nhl dman.

Dubas didn’t draft Liljgeren actually, that was Lou. But Dubas did draft Sandin and Holmberg. Off the top of my head, players he has drafted that have played at least one NHL game: Sandin, Durzi, SDA, Kral, Holmberg, Robertson, and Abbruzzuze. And that’s not counting guys like Hirvonen, Neimela and Knies (or any 2015 draft picks from when he was intern GM with Hunter). I think his drafting has been good so far, but it’s a little early to judge him on that, as his raft picks are 18-22 years old.

Whose to say Amirov wouldn’t be in the leafs lineup right now filling in on the 2nd line? Again this post of hypotheticals is nonsense

Yeah I was very high on Amirov. I thought he was easily a top 10 talent in that draft. My believe my mock draft that year went something like:

1. Byfield
2. Stutzle
3. Lafreniere
4. Sanderson
5. Holtz
6. Drysdale
7. Perfetti
8. Jarvis
9. Mercer
10. Amirov

He was not a consensus top 10 though and was widely considered a reach at 15

Amirov was always planned to be a long term project, that is a fact. He wasn't coming over to N.A. for a couple more years and when he does, he'll probably need another year in the Marlies to get accustom to the smaller rink and bigger, faster, smarter and tougher N.A. style hockey.

Amirov is still a dynamic offensive talent. His diagnosis is tragic but he still can fight back to make a name for himself in Toronto.

Leafs need cheap producers on the W and that's why I think they took him. Schneider has been awesome for NYR though. Definitely can see the benefit of him on the Leafs.

NYR's traded up to select Schneider, so yes he worked out well for NYR.

As another person posted, finding wingers is alot more easier than finding a Rh'd Dman, so when one drops into your lap, you get him.

Heck the Leafs could have got an extra pick and drafted down and still select Amirov, if that was Dubas guy.

I believe Schneider was scouted to be the higher than Amirov.

I can't remember what made Schneider drop in the Draft. injury? poor Jr. season? attitude?

Ok I see what you mean now. I agree he has a lot of potential. It’s shame it is t going to be reached, at least not fully now.

Pretty sure he just naturally slipped. No character issues or performance concerns from what I remember. Just teams prioritizing other players.

Nah, you're exactly who im thinking of. The guy who made a "leafs need to trade selfish nylander because he'll cost too much" after nylander scored 5 points against calgary.
