Ok, how much do you think Monahan will get on his next contract ? A serious question

Honestly I got no idea, but that contract makes no sense for the habs long term. IF he's going to be our 2nd center (assuming Dach, whoever we draft in 2023, Beck, etc) don't work out, we shouldn't sign him to that large of a contract. I think he's played amazing so far this year, but were still roughly 3-4 years away from truly competing, and with Monahan's injury history idk if he will be able to stay healthy and effective enough to warrant that many years at that AAV.

In the best-case scenario, we trade him at the deadline, and if Went Wughes can land us another first its even better. So many teams have failed to take the next step because they rush their rebuild (look at how signing Miller has worked out so far for the Canucks), and with a limited cap, we should focus on maximizing every dollar. The focus should be on developing our young talent, our window hasn't opened up yet and that Monahan contract is a move you make when you are already competing now.

Why would the Kings even entertain that trade? They don't need any more forward prospects, let alone an overage prospect that appears to be an undersized career AHLer. Aside from Kaiden Guhle, the Habs having nothing the Kings want that would entice them into giving up a prospect like Turcotte.

Honestly, change the prospect going back to Jaret Anderson-Dolan and the Kings still wouldn't do it.

Trotchek signed 5.6mx7 and copp signed 5.6mx5. Those were the 2nd tier Cs last offseason,

If Monahan comes back and can continue to produce at the same clip, he would be having similar production as those 2 and could maybe sneak a 5m aav out of someone,

His injury history will always linger with him, so teams will be hesitant to give hmm a big contract, if it wasn’t for his start in Montreal, there was a real possibility he doesn’t even get a contract from anyone next year

This…and Canes have $1.6m in LTIR cap space so even if they wanted Hoffman they would need retention.

Mantha is better than all of those players going to Washington, and the Caps add a 2023 first?

Most of the time, he tends to zone out frequently.

-Kings pass. If they're gonna start cashing in their young forwards, I feel like they use them to get upgrades at the NHL level, not flip them out for a future and an older prospect.

-Edmonton has Campbell & Skinner both signed long-term - why would they target another goalie with term? I could squint and see them targeting a rental this year if they juggle some things, but this just seems like a weird use of their assets - not to mention an odd one for Montreal. I'm sure you could get JP out of Edmonton for a song at this point, and Jake Allen would be more valuable in a tandem with Sam Montembault than Cayden Primeau.

-Hoffman is starting to pull himself out of cap dump territory but he's still in the "traded for FCs/lower prospects at best" zone. 10 points in 24 GP with a $4.5M cap hit doesn't scream out as a guy you pay a pair of 2nds for.

-Anderson is a worse version of Mantha, so right there the Caps pass on this one. I can see the need for Edmundson, but Dvorak doesn't strike me as a guy they would target - they're trying to move Lars Eller because they already have better players ahead of him at center, and Dvorak just takes his place as an overpaid 3C.

-You'd be lucky to get anyone to take Armia off your hands. Wideman is cheap enough I could see someone throwing a 6th or 7th at you for him.

I also think you're giving Monahan way too much and Caufield not enough. Cole's on a 40-45 goal pace so I think you extend him the full 8 years in the $7.5-8M range; the only way I see him signing that low is if you bridge him for 2-3 years, and then you're just gonna pay through the nose for him down the line. Monahan, meanwhile, is a guy you should look at the Andrew Copp or Vincent Trocheck deals for value. I see him getting 4x$5M at most; his injury history makes anything longer than that a bit of a risk in my book.
