Holy cow that Caps deal is awful for so many reasons:
a. All but one of Washington's top 6 is under contract past next year and the one who isn't (Strome) is an RFA. While Washington does have some expiring deals on the back end, Miller certainly isn't helping there.
b. Miller's 8 mil cap hit next year leaves Washington even less space to sign the guys that actually are expiring. likely any chance of retaining guys like Milano, Strome, Hathaway, and Johansson would be out the window in this trade.
c. Washington already has 4 capable centers when healthy in Kuznetsov, Strome, Backstrom, and Dowd. Their priority would not be to get a 5th one with a long term deal.
d. Mantha brings more value to Washington as a winger with only 1 year left after this (better trade flexibility if needed), Miller brings no value due to that extension.
e. If Washington is buying, it's for an RD who is capable of sustaining top 4 minutes to stand in for Carlson until he returns.
f. Washington has no reason to soil a perfectly good locker room with a malcontent like Miller.
Not a single bit of this makes sense.
